SUSAN SONTAG'S FAVOURITE FILMS

By: Kenji

Susan Sontag, the distinguished and well-known U.S writer, cultural commentator, film-maker …

From different top 10s over the years, a selection of 50 in the 70s, a late selection of 30 (thanks to José Sarmiento), also some selections for a Japanese season. Any others please.

Directors she mentioned as near misses: Imamura, Angelopoulos. Anyone know which of their films she particularly liked? She came to rate Mizoguchi very highly- more highly than Kurosawa who is better represented here. Anyone know which other films by him should be listed here?

Sontag was onto Sokurov early. She was probably one of his first vocal critical supporters in America. I'm still on the fence about The Second Circle; to me it feels more transitional. 'The Stone', however, is brilliant, and probably the best least seen film of the 90's I can think of, especially from a major director.

Begotten also needs to be on the list. Sontag named it as one of the ten best films of modern times. Merihiage: "And it was there that Peter Scarlet and Tom Luddy showed the film to Susan Sontag, who then called me up. And I projected the film in her living room for like 21 of her closest friends, and it was remarkable. Because she brought it to the Berlin Film Festival, and said just wonderful things about the film, that…. She used the word “masterpiece”. I hate to use that word, but she really loved the film and thought it was just a profoundly original piece of work."
