The 60s was the Last Time Movies Mattered

By: sd burch

It’s not that great movies aren’t being made, even as I write this. Or that there haven’t been great periods of movie-making since then. But in terms of themes, of structures, of filmmaking grammar, of a belief that films could change the world (or at least how we see it), the 1960s was the last great outpouring, flowering even, of movie-making by great artists and by great artisans. And maybe the last great outpouring of excitement and interest in films’ history, present, and future.

I completely agree Kenji. What you see on this list is hardly definitive of what was happening, and my list will be expanding shortly as I pause to refresh my memory further (like adding Shirley Clarke and Ivan Passer, and the Maysles, among others).

A great decade for the growth of cinema in many countries in various parts of the world, new waves in Czechoslovakia (so many superb films!) and Brazil among others. And in Japan there was a lot going on, beyond Kurosawa! I agree there was a sense of excitement, of political dynamism and belief in potential change.
