Nice list... but Sansho The Bailiff is 1954 not 1955! :)

It is hilariously disappointing that neither Alien nor Blade Runner can be find under their respective years. And Full Metal Jacket is apparently inferior to Planes, Trains, and Automobiles. Unreal.

I think Alien is pretty great but 1979 is a tough year and there were at least ten better movies. I don't much care for Blade Runner, aside from its great visuals I don't think it has much to offer as it's a rather simplistic story yet muddled in the telling and frankly a little boring. I never cared what happened and generally think Ridley Scott is incredibly overrated. Planes, Trains, and Automobiles and Full Metal Jacket are too different to directly compare, but the latter is one of the most extreme cases of an excellent first half rapidly devolving into a disappointing second. The boot camp section is classic Kubrick but the Vietnam scenes bring nothing new to the table and lack a sense of purpose, failing to deliver on the promise of what preceded them. Believe it or not, different people have different taste and opinions. For real.

Thanks. Leon is okay as far as action movies go, but wouldn't make my top 25 of the year. Honestly, I think Dead Poet's Society is downright bad. Probably Weir's worst as far as I'm concerned.

Amazing! One of the best collection of lists I have seen on Mubi. I have been making these lists every year since about 92 and it's always interesting to look back even though my tastes are always changing!

Quite phenomenal if I say so. I disagree with much but that's quite beside the point. This list reaffirms my love of cinema while reminding me how much there is still to be seen.

Sansho is one of the all-time greats. It has nothing to do with being less enamored and everything to do with less seen. I don't see nearly a quarter of what I used to and don't have access to many new foreign releases while in theaters, so while I'm pretty well-versed on the classics, the majority of foreign language films from the 2000s, 1990s, and to some extent even the 80's have gone unseen by me.

Sansho the Bailiff is the correct choice for 1954 against strong competition. You don't seem so enamoured of non-Anglophone films in the last few decades. And yes, we need Cabiria on the site.
