The Best of the Best

By: Cliff Burns

These are the films that have stayed with me longest, most intimately. The reasons vary, the themes are diverse; excellence and originality the only criteria:

1) Citizen Kane
2) Brazil
3) Apocalypse Now
4) The Wild Bunch
5) 2001: A Space Odyssey
6) Eraserhead
7) Raging Bull & Taxi Driver
8) Delicatessan & City of Lost Children
9) City of God
10) Lord of War
11) Vampyr
12) Wages of Fear
13) Duck Soup
14) The Crowd (Dir. King Vidor)

I often write with film soundtracks playing in the background--a recent favorite is the one for "The Fountain", a collaboration between the Kronos Quartet and Scottish prog band Mogwai. Brilliant!

I've been very lucky to run across film-lovers from all over, a number of whom steered me toward offerings that become immediate favorites. I would never have discovered King Vidor's "The Crowd" if someone on a forum hadn't mentioned it. Always looking for cult faves and silent movie "lost" classics to bolster my collection and augment my cinematic education.
