the Digital Cinema

By: JP. Schmidt

Digital cinema has finally reached a level where it can truly bring a brush to the hands of so many artists around the world that would otherwise be unable to paint their mind’s eye.

With this new found technology it gives a new feeling to DIY cinema and has a feeling of being today’s 16mm. Many artists in the past used 16mm and B/W 35mm only because it was what was viable and what was cheap.

The following films are in celebration of this tool and in encouragement to all of you would be filmmakers, shoot what you want and shoot with your heart, what is in front of the camera is worlds more important than the camera itself.

Feel free to suggest films I may have missed/overlooked/just didn’t post!

*this is a list under development and larger article to come

**I’d also like to note the names of directors attached to this list. Keep that in mind if you ever hear that “digital is a dirty word” for filmmaking.

Should big-budget films shot on RED, Alexa, etc. really be included on this list? When I think of digital cinema, I don't think of Hollywood/Indiewood productions using digital cameras as an alternative to 35mm, but the guys like Mike Figgis, dogme95, Kiarostami, Godard's recent work, etc.--folks who utilize the medium of digital cinema as a new film form.

I'm not going to dive into picking and choosing who makes it on the list -- there are some grey areas like Coppola's work while being of a decent budget is self funded for the most part. Plenty of small films being shot on the RED too. We as digital filmmakers can learn from anyone, it's simply a list of all digital films, but thank you for your suggestions -- maybe a future list is in order of 'smaller' and more 'personal' productions will follow.

The Dogme 95 manifesto/Vow of Chastity states that the film format must be Academy 35mm. I must confess that I haven't seen The Idiots, but I'm sure that Festen was shot on 35mm. But still, an interesting subject for a list. I would suggest adding the first Crank to keep Crank: High Voltage company. Van Diemen's Land sums-up your argument about the painterly abilities afforded to digital cinematography perfectly. www.foec.wordpress.com

academy 35mm just was reference to the aspect ratio and also all of the films had a film out, but even the Idiots was shot on video (according to IMDB). Thanks for the suggestions though and the link! I'll check it out

You should add Ten by Kiarostami. Also you should check out 10 on Ten, which is a documentary he made about his film-making philosophies and talks a lot about digital camera and how he feels it will change cinema.

I believe Sally Potter's Rage would fit nicely in here.
