The Favorite Films of Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne

By: Kai White

These are films that were screened at the Cinémathèque Royale de Belgique in 2005 by the Dardenne Brothers. They showed these films as representations as what they viewed as movies that were important to them or influential on their works.

Currently missing from The Auteurs, to be added later if the films are added to the database -

Les cinéphiles: Le retour de Jean and Les cinéphiles 2: Eric a disparu – Louis Skorecki
L’argent fait le bonheur – Robert Guédiguian

I've not seen Enclosure either- it could be very educating

I agree completely, Kenji - getting to do this research on the Dardennes has been just a world of discovery for me, and I'm falling in love with their films a little more each day. As a pointer, because this seems like a great list and I'd love to see all of these (if available), the Armand Gatti film Enclosure mentioned in the text above is apparently the film they count as the most influential. I've not seen it, but am very eager to.

Great to see this here as well as on the forum thread (where it's easier for discussion, so fine with me ,by the way). The Dardenne bros are among the very best directors today, consistent excellence in getting close to the lives of (often downtrodden or struggling working class) people, in very realistic and involving manner. A fascinating selection
