The Fincher

By: DT

Ranked. An entertaining and polished filmmaker – I do enjoy his work from time to time.

1. Fight Club – It should be painfully obvious that the film isn’t advocating Tyler Durden’s pseudo-machismo dogma; rather, it’s playing off it and almost mocking it. That aside even, this is simply a wickedly entertaining, exhilirating ride every time I see it.

2. The Curious Case of Benjamin Button – A curious look indeed at life, death and ageing; at times charming, at other times trite (that f-cking hummingbird!!) but ultimately it evolves into a truly poignant fable. It looks great too, with reference to both the period photography and the make-up work, which really is quite a feat.

3. The Social Network – Very, very sharp, stylish and fluid. The Henley Regatta scene was just fucking weird though (and not really in a good way).

4. Zodiac – Noticeably long but also noticeably stylish, absorbing, fast-moving and engaging – and even then, its length isn’t necessarily a bad thing either. 148 minutes not badly spent at all – definitely one of the better police procedurals of recent years, as well as an involving look at the nature of obsession.

5. The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo – Not so much a straightforward remake than a complete reinvention, a repudiation. Nor is it so much Fincher the film director as it is Fincher the music video director – though that’s not such a bad thing, as he leaves one hell of an impression; with his frame constantly shifting, camera always moving and Reznor’s pulsating score enveloping the theatre (Immigrant Song, Orinoco Flow and the gratuitous opening credits are also delicious indulgences). While the Swedish film may be the superior adaptation of Larsson’s novel, Fincher’s is a stylistic triumph of its own volition.

++++++

7. Vogue – The choreography, art direction and editing are all real nice; the tune’s a catchy one too. Dug it quite a bit.
