The highlights of experimental, magickal & counter-cultural cinema!
By: Konrad Szlendak
My second list on MUBI concerns all favourite and highly recommended occult, experimental, magickal, counter-cultural, drug releated & surrealistic movies!
They’ve been all picked according to a certain key – they were at their time groundbreaking, shocking, margined or very hard to figure, some of them have retained this status even till now. Most of them operate on symbolic, alchemical, psychedelic or highly sophisticated intellectual level, which is why they appeal only to a particular minority, but some of these bring everybody in…
Among this volume of experimental and socially subversive works you’ll find short, medium and full length pictures, either obscure, fairly or even well recognized. Abstract movies have been put aside and they will be listed separately. The same concerns 60’s exploitation flicks (even these ones with a sort of psychedelic musings), for which another list has been created already on my profile. 70’s are coming! All other artistic or auteur’s pictures, which lack the vibe – let’s say “just not wicked enough”, have been omitted from listing. You’ll find thousand of other lists praising their grandness anyway!
Couple of modern, commercial movies have been checked in as well as they emanate great energy and at the time of their release they represented strong, revolutionary commitment or had to do something with drugs or personal transgression. As their agenda has been promptly absorbed by a fluff of mainstream, it doesn’t make them less valuable, at least that’s my explanation!
