The Saddest You Will Ever Be is in Her Absence... Those Eyes, Those Eyes...

By: Falderal

Takamine-san…
In order of her performance, not necessarily the strength of the film itself.

But I’ve never felt so brave, As when I’m looking at your face.
They can decimate my body, But my heart will not disgrace.
They can torture and interrogate, And shackle to my boot.
I will gnaw off my own leg, And hop the fuck right back to you.

Nothin’ left here but me and you…

When I first saw your icon, I wasn't sure who I was looking at but for some strange reason, or more ironic than strange, I tried to find a good high-res picture from "Yearning" on Google, to no avail. I was pleased to see "Yearning" at #1. She had such a powerful gaze.

It's from the astounding climax sequence in "As a Wife, as a Woman." It's one of the earlier examples of Naruse's inserting of genre elements; or rather, more recognizably western genre elements; into his form and the chiaroscuro lighting accentuates an already direly bitter ending. Recommended if you get the chance...

    Yea, definitely on the watchlist.

I've had a similar thought today... over one year after her death, it seems only after revisiting Naruse (“Flowing,” “Daughters, Wives and a Mother”) that I've realized what an enormous loss struck us at the eve of 2011... I was saddened by then, but I feel only now I've come to a realization that Hideko-chan lives only in photograms. That’s an immortality of sorts, though, so we’ll never forget those eyes...

The saddest part to me is she made over 400 films, but only about 30 are available with Eng. subs... I feel I'll never truly understand her greatness, but even if her work with Naruse and Kinoshita is but a clue... what a clue!!!* Her role in "Daughters..." is small (which put it further down on this list), but she does a lot with it. I used to think Chishu Ryu was the master of character and lead actor roles, but Takamine handled them incredibly well, too.

P.S. - Yours and Ruby's viewing of Naruse made me so desperately want to watch a Naruse with Takamine (hence, "As a Wife, as a Woman" and this list) that I couldn't stand it. Thank you!

You must have noticed by now another Kinoshita film staring her is on SMz, and I was really anxious to see it: "Garden of Women." I'll try to re-watch "Chimneys" today and then I'll give it a look. I should watch more Naruse, by the way.
