The Setentas (os anos da Revolução) - os 70's in Portugal

By: chanandre

The 70’s were a very weird decade for Portuguese cinema. There was this rift between engaged filmmakers (after the Political coup of 74) and those who could not care less, and made their biggest masterpieces whilst many filmmakers were making propaganda films. Try for yourselves. The films are either paternalistic and militant or are extremely personal and alternative.

I enjoyed Robert Kramer's Scenes from the Class Struggle in Portugal, a leftist polemic documentary about the revolutionary events, Bourgeois and rightwing backlash, and betrayal of true socialism by the "Socialist" party that was supported by the USA and kept Portugal in the capitalist fold.

Yes I know thanks to Fabio Penela and dust in love. Those are two massive adders, indeed. Hence the list (and I've yet to make lists from the 60's, 50's. 40's, 30's, 20's, etc, and obviously the 00's...). I only add films I've seen though, there's a couple more films from the 90's and notably many shorts that I haven't seen yet.
