Flaws? What Me?? Lol jk…
Yes, they’re very commercial, and I did that on purpose. I think it’s my background… when I was nineteen, I read Truffaut’s Hitchcock (which I thought was the pinnacle of eclectic film education) and totally subscribed to Hitchcock’s idea that the purpose of film storytelling is to (and understand this ISN’T RIGHT OR CORRECT—IT’S JUST WHAT I BOUGHT INTO):
a) Sell tickets, and
b) Create and sustain a FANTASY that audiences will enjoy.
It was later that I discovered art films… but I still enjoy good old-fashioned Hollywood films. Yeah, there are some great independent filmmakers working in this decade. My favorite is Bahrani. I’m also a big Dardenne bros. fan now. I really respect Von Trier, even if I can’t stand any of his films (except The Kingdom… that movie is AWESOME)… at least he’s pushing boundaries, which I don’t see a whole lot of in this decade. I see an emerging Neo-Neo-Realist Movement (which points back to Bahrani, who I believe is a master), but not a lot of filmmakers pushing the boundaries of cinematic expression like Fellini(love) or Antonioni (respect) did back in the day.
At any rate, the short answer is that, while I genuinely enjoy a nice helping of Truth, I’m still a geek, and I still love watching things blow up. Heck, I’d put Stargate on that list if it weren’t made in the 90s lol.
That’s why my list is so commercial. :)
I'd love to see yours.
I see some flaws here personally. VERY commercial picks. But all very good, so I'll give you that.
