The Top 100 Movies I'm Most Embarrassed About Still Not Having Seen

By: Chris Jones

Fairly self explanatory. There are a lot of classic, phenomenal films that I still haven’t gotten around to watching, and while I’m actively trying to get more into movies the fact that I haven’t seen these yet still gives me a pervading sense of shame :(. In order to qualify, these had to be movies that I really want to see, as well as movies that basically EVERYONE has seen, and if they’re movies that everyone who’s really into film specifically has seen then that counts too, which is why you’ll see movies as mainstream as “The Terminator” and as arthouse as “The Seventh Seal”. Essentially, this is a checklist for my own personal “absolutely must-see in order to stop embarrassing myself” standards.

UPDATE: Have seen “Groundhog Day”, “Gangs of New York”, “Dirty Harry,” “Audition,” “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas,” “True Grit,” “Yojimbo,” “Shane,” “The Texas Chainsaw Massacre,” “Throne of Blood,” “La Dolce Vita,” “The Seventh Seal,” “Memento,” “Suspiria,” “Kill Bill”,“The Terminator,” “Vertigo,” “There Will Be Blood,” “Scarface,” “Jules and Jim,” “Casino” and “The Thin Red Line”.

In no order.

I would start with Midnight Cowboy or Mullholland Drive

I am glad to say I have seen everything on this list with the exception of 'Throne of Blood' and 'Grave of the Fireflies'. I just saw The Battle of Algiers yesterday.

You may get some more good ideas from the top 60 in Sight & Sound's critics' poll, or John Kobal's poll of Top 100 Movies (2 lists here) but of course they are still geographically weak, with many parts of the world under-represented. It's great to still have many famous films to see, but wide horizons can be very rewarding too

Oh definitely, I'm trying to see as many movies from as many places as possible.
