Actionism describes a 20th century artistic movement that (at times) combines elements of body art, theathre, happening, performance art, ritual, animal sacrifices, and fluxus. The actions themselves can be characterized by an emphasis on the human body, violence, and transgression.

The Vienna Actionists are primarily Günter Brus, Otto Muehl, Hermann Nitsch and Rudolf Schwarzkogler. The likes of Kurt Kren, Otmar Bauer, and Arnulf Rainer are also closely linked to the movement.
