Thanks, Roger. I did some research, and though he was born in Turkey, his family immigrated to the US when he was three or four. List corrected.
I was under the impression Elia Kazan was raised in New York, and for all intensive purposes American.
No problem -- thanks for the suggestions. I wanted to throw some titles together before I started doing some research.
What Nair did I choose, or are you referring to NEW YORK, I LOVE YOU? That's on the list for Fatih Akin and Yvan Attal, not Nair.
I thought the list might get too crowded with British directors. None of the Renoir films on The Auteurs fit the list. I probably wouldn't count Mira Nair.
Maybe a pity you're not allowing British directors too, like Laughton, Hitch, Mendes...but how about Curtiz (e.g Mildred Pierce), Sjostrom, Kazan, Renoir, Lubitsch, Stroheim, Lang, Zinnemann, Ulmer, Preminger- lots of Austrians- and don't forget Leone's West to go with his America. Does Mira Nair count as European?
