I like how you included non-military war films (e.g. Au revoir les efants). To think that the civilian and military spheres of warfare are separate is to be anachronistic.

I think you should update this list and add Wajda's "Katyn."

Thank you, Sir Kenji. You deserve to be knighted for this!

you really like Lust, Caution that much? wonderful choices but you can easily alter Howl's Moving Castle with Nausicaa (though both are fabulous moving paintings) and the mediocre Black Book with the mighty Soldier of Orange. by the way, i adore Neighbors but...it's kind of a misfire for a list like that...of...heavily tragic themes :S i need to see Rivette's two-folder Joan of Arc epics and a Greek film could fit here as well ;) i had to edit due to my stubborness of correcting mistakes, haha. we don't have much of a war film production but one that definitely reaches the heights of Klimov and Keaton (whether it's satire or not) and i dare surpasses your favorite Patient (hehe) is Glory Sky by Kanellopoulos. i'll also keep an eye on the Yugoslav production i've missed since The Ambush is one of the seminal of our region as well as The Danube Waves!

I'm not any more keen on Born on 4th July than Platoon really, it's a borderline inclusion with better films missing, but i think it's more critical of the US in Vietnam than is Platoon. Which Greek films should be included? If only more Greek films were available in UK

"Shame" is an extraordinary film about civil war. A very different kind of war film.

Hiroshima Mon Amour is probably the most notorious of "arty" films, but I do like it. Grand Illusion and the other top ten are really good too. Grave of the Fireflies needs to be higher though.

Another great list, my personal favorite which I hope you´re also going to include is "When the Tenth Month Comes" about the final days of the Vietnam War.

Another solid list but I would add: 12 o'clock High directed by Henry King Battleground directed by William Wellman (battleround is the film that was used to force Louis Mayer out of MGM.)

Raoul Walsh's The Naked and the Dead (1958) and Noel Coward's In Which We Serve (1942) are two of my favourites.
