William A. "Wild Bill" Wellman

By: Ally the Manic Listmaker

Ranked.

Considering the multitude of his work, Wellman is an unjustly underrated director. Even though I’ve seen 43 of his films (!), I still need to see much more. Thankfully, TCM regularly plays his films and a lot of his work is available on DVD. Please join me in watching more of his work.

Just seen CHINATOWN NIGHTS from 1929 (aka Tong Wars)...full of impressionistic shadows, wonderful tracks, and moody squalid interiors...feels like a silent film most of the time, and interesting to read about King Vidor's wife FLORENCE (quite exquisite) getting someone else to replicate her "tremulous" voice ....wow, on the cusp of sound, it must have been amazing back then to have music, and sound effects added...quite a solemn, grpahic tale of the times and reminded me of the brilliant WILD BOYS OF THE ROAD ..... also interesting to read that the same cameraman did BEGGARS OF LIFE, which is difficult to find, despite it being shown publically in the UK with a live soundtrack supplied by the greatest of film ravers, Mark Kermode, and friends.

I know, it's crazy! I would like to add more films, but there are literally thousands to be added and I don't have that much time. I'd much rather be making lists.
