Lang's Scarlet Street is based on "La Chienne" (The Bitch) by Georges de La Fouchardière, a book that also gave birth to Renoir's La Chienne. Do you have Youth without Youth by Coppola, based on Eliade's books in the list? It is far from providing a decent insight in Eliade's life/work (that was my first impression of the movie), but that is beside the point. Peter Delpeut's Forbidden Quest is based on Gordon Pym by Poe, and on elements from Eliot's The Waste Land, though it is not an adaptation as such, more like a reinterpretation. And i STRONGLY recommend La moara cu noroc, based on a classical Romanian work, directed by Dan Pita and Mircea Veroiu, but that is not on mubi, unfortunately.

sorry, i wrote this before i had my coffee. La moara cu noroc was directed by Victor Iliu. Pita & Veroiu directed Nunta de piatra (Stone Wedding), one of its halves is also based on a book by Agarbiceanu. Finally, another Romanian film based on a book: Padurea Spanzuratilor by Liviu Ciulei.

Good work but too long. Short lists get better attention.

Great list, I'm an avid reader and always fascinated by film adaptations. In fact this list was also really informative as I had no idea that some of my favourite films here - To Live, Red Cliff and Farewell My Concubine - were actually books, so thanks for that. I'd be hard pushed to list my favourite adaptations but right up there is Sense and Sensibility which almost improved on the book ( If that isn't heresy) Death in Venice, The House of Mirth and....I won't go on. Thanks again.

I'm not sure if the list above is arranged according to the original work or the film it's based on, but Nazarín is based on a Spanish novel, not a Mexican one. Incidentally, Pérez-Galdós' 'Tristana' also has an adaptation by Buñuel, though it perhaps wasn't included in this particular poll.

Great list... from Juan Rulfo (the greatest contemporary Mexican writer IMO, although he was not a prolific one) there is a fair adaptation of “Pedro Paramo” (1967) by Carlos Velo that was in competition in Cannes that year, sadly somebody is trying to bring it to life again with Gael Garcia-Bernal as Pedro himself (I guess)... I hope is not a complete let down.

Oh! This is the last time I bother you with this, really, but there's also Georges Franju's adaptation of Jean Cocteau's novel "Thomas the Impostor"... :) And one last thing, have you seen Nohea's list of films based on poetry? It's an amazing one. Thought you'd like it :)

Hi Kim, it's me again... :) Thanks for adding the films I told you about, but I still have another suggestion to make, don't know if you've watched Cocteau's "Les parents terribles", but it's also based on his play of the same name. It's a film I pretty liked. Again, thanks for such a great list. :)

Another title comes to my mind: Buñuel's Nazarin is an adaptation of the novel of the same title by one the 19th century Spanish classic writers, Benito Pérez Galdós. :)

Kim, may I suggest you Mishima's "Patriotism"? I Think it is one of the rare cases where a writer directed a film based on a literary work of his own pen.

How about "Hunger":http://www.theauteurs.com/films/21455 (based on the Knut Hamsun novel)? I would also maybe suggest some of Ousmane Sembène's films, as some were based on his own novels of the same name: "Mandabi":http://www.theauteurs.com/films/20885 "Xala":http://www.theauteurs.com/films/21487

Some really interesting titles, Bresson also adapted a second novel by Bernanos with "Mouchette". And Kurosawa´s "Throne of Blood" comes to mind.
