Zhang Yimou

If there is one word to use to describe Zhang Yimou’s films, I would use beauty. I feel there is no other director (Hyberbole Alert) in the World who uses color as well as Zhang does. In each film it is evident of the director’s visual flare, even in films such as The Story of Qiu Su and To Live which are somewhat more “earthy” in the color palette used.

Zhang can do small, personal films like The Road Home, or giant productions like Hero. And even with the visual flare he never loses sight of the human story the film is telling.

Zhang Yimou is a master of storytelling, and I say that with as much objectivity as possible.

Here are my favorite Zhang films, unfortunately I haven’t been able to see all his films yet, damn living in this area, but someday I’ll find the ones I haven’t seen yet.
