Not a perfect film by Lars von Trier but the initial release of now infamous E trilogy shows he had a lot more than just promise. Laying down a distinctive style Lars confidence with a camera and framing hints at an unorthodox genius, an approach that would affect European cinema for the next fifteen years. Like a mystery wrapped in a riddle we may not arrive any wiser at the conclusion but we know we have seen a new face of a talent that is immense. Like all great visionaries he is a paradigm and welcomed imagineer. I will pretend to understand some of this just for the pure joy of possibly solving more with each viewing. I like his world gone a tad askew. It’s so far removed from anything Hollywood and lays the ground work for the wonderfully realized Europa.
