Never really knew anything about Crumb accept subconsciously through random passings of his art, so i watched this Doc with a complete ignorant view on who he is.
The film never really delves into his professional life much, it mostly centers around he and his family/acquaintances eccentricities, and boy! are there many.
Crumb himself is s super eccentric person who is stuck in a time long forgotten, but he is completely normal compared to the rest of the nut jobs in his family. i guess compared to a meditating molester and a suicidal recluse, anyone can look pretty normal. this is where the film gets interesting, you are given a very inside look into a very ’out there" family and how there is a fine line between brilliance and insanity. you also get a look, sort of, inside of the mind of a complete freethinker. Crumb makes no apologies for who he is or what he does. this is who he is and that is all there is to it.
The only thing the film is missing is an idea of how these men became who they are. there is some discussion, but not much, on their parents; who i can only presume are the reason these people are the way they are.
Crumb is a decent, disturbing and yet unique documentary.
