Whit Stillman is one of the best examples of an acquired taste in film. And while I fully understand why someone wouldn’t appreciate or enjoy his work, I could watch his characters talk for hours. The question often arises about how Stillman views those characters and I don’t know if I have the answer. I think he’s certainly critical of them to some degree, but more than anything I sense that he’s sympathetic. Even if he doesn’t love them despite their faults and shortsightedness, I kind of do.
