Manoel de Oliveira has an eye for old world beauty and intricacies of color in a location. Each scene in this Portuguese city, especially the interiors of these old buildings, is perfectly designed and immediately puts the viewer into the wealthy but cultured lifestyle. The way the story was told, with the main character conversing with an older woman, is distracting and does not add anything to the story or relationship intrigue. The film’s plot is underdeveloped and feels forced. The viewer is unable to relate to the characters situations and is glad the ending plays out as it does. With these flaws, the movie is still worth a viewing, for the brilliant shots of progressions through this wonderful landscape and the simple beauty of the blonde-haired girl. Recommended.
