After viewing Scorpio Rising, I can definitely see how Scorsese was influenced by Anger’s film-making. I kept thinking of Mean Streets as I was watching this; in particular, the scenes of Scorpio hanging out in his room while getting ready for the biker meet/party, as well as the revolutionary use of contemporary pop chart music. And what a great 60’s soundtrack to listen to for a half an hour as the viewer is bombarded with a multitude of gay biker images juxtaposed with film representations of Jesus, swastikas as well as scenes from inside of an abandoned church. This and Inauguration of the Pleasure Dome are my 2 favourite films by Anger thus far. I definitely look forward to discovering more of his work.
