Antonio Banderas was beyond great in Almdovar’s first couple of films as wildly homoerotic men on murderous benders. Amidst a group of characters that either cant love, dont know how to love, and cant seem to find love; it’s Banderas; killing away; completely true to his heart’s desires. This film takes camp and melodrama and spins it into magic moments that ring truly unique such as the loss of virginity, late night dinners, bizarre premiers, and amnesiac spells that blitzkrieg out of the nothingness for good measure. How awesome would it be to know you are so loved you drive your lover absolutely wild with passion! What we govern as the law of desire is a law that’s rarely followed and what pleasure when it’s obeyed. Almodovar yearns in his films for the same things we all do and he paints those desires in colorful extremes that any other pedestrian narratives barely graze. This is pure artistry at work here folks.
