Al narrates most of the story with a bitter understanding of the cold hand of fate. The dialog crackles with post-war film-noir jargon. An innocent man’s life is torn apart by cruel circumstances. Tom Neal plays the desperate man Al who assumes another man’s identity. Ann Savage chews the scenery and her costar for that matter as Vera, an opportunistic dark influence. With all the scenes that take place in a car rolling down the highways of America it was difficult for me to tell if sound stages and rear projections were used or if filming was possible at that time with a camera attached to a moving vehicle on location. In either case, it was done well. The focus on eyes whether in car rear view mirrors or with shadow cast on Al’s face except for a beam of light across his eyes was classic.
