Steve Mcqueen seems to have a neck for characters who abuse their bodies to the point of self destruction. His second film explores the same grounds as he uses a sex addict to once again explore this man’s insatiable desire. One thing that I find most interesting aspect of this film is its tendency to be ambiguous to the intentions of the main character; giving his audience the challenge to make up what is going through Brandon’s mind and in the process, having them examine their own ethical standpoint. Shame presents to its audience a half-baked characterization of sex addicts, although the director’s vision and unrelenting style of directing more than make up for this lacking.
