Murder has never been this much fun. This along with Divorce, Italian Style and Dr. Strangelove are the greatest black comedies ever made. What makes this film special is not just Alec Guinness’s remarkable eight character performance, but the criminally overlooked central performance of Dennis Price. He is one of the great screen characters of all time. Even though what he is doing is amoral, we can’t help but root for him and his fight against the hypocritical aristocrasy. Since we know Alec Guinness will return as another character after each murder, we feel no regret. This is a nasty but charming little film that has lost non of its ability to shock and entertain.
