It’s my favourite Jodorowsky work.
The film is a mix of mad horror genre style and sprawling art. For all of its beauty, violence, and irreverence- it still manages to be a very traditional film with complex characters, a lean structure, and classical cinematographic grammar.
The best sequences are those where Jodorowsky is allowed to inject his love of miming, magic, theater, metaphysics, and symbols. Then he switches into manic Argento kitsch mode and it ejects you into another movie you aren’t quite sure you can take. Jodorowsky is not afraid to be over-the-top or ridiculous because his Aquarius heart bleeds all over the film.
It’s great stuff.
