Another tonic blast of emotionally-charged adrenaline from Suzuki. His films are always lusty, innovative and inspiring; B-movies made by very smart, creative people who make violent, erotic fever dreams on a dime. I look forward to every Suzuki title; his films are always alive and interesting. They take that B-movie ethic — never, ever bore the viewer, and when in doubt, speed things up — and take it to exhilarating extremes. The images are always so striking, like the one of Harumi running away, shedding her clothes as she runs up the stairs. Or the one of the adjutants face literally breaking apart. Suzuki was kind of a Japanese B-movie Welles, I think: he seems to approach every shot thinking “What can I do differently from every one else?” The films are sheer pleasure.
