“You think it’s a blessing to know what God wants?”
The only film about Jesus that ever made any sense to me. Peter Gabriel’s magnificent score. Satan as a white British teen girl. The silence of Jesus’ baptism. “It is accomplished.” I called my wife on a cellphone in Morocco. “I’m standing in Mary Magdalene’s whorehouse!” I said. “Get the hell out of there!” she replied. I was in LA at the premiere. The day after 20,000 people marched in protest on Universal. The ticket line ran all around the theater. Protesters, many holding bibles, all white, paraded around us. One of them said: “Jesus is the most important figure in history. We even get our calendar from him.” An Indian man beside me mumbles, “Thee Western Calendar.”
