it’s not actually a guideline, it was set up right from the get go that cuts are to be between 25 and 1.30 … and if you need time to think over your footage and edit them down then don’t upload it until you’re completely happy with it and have got it to the right length … the time frame is good because it dictates and forces you to totally consider what you capture and then edit together … an interview or conversation is obviously really interesting and great stuff, but for this project it should only be a moment of dialogue captured (or cut up William Burroughs style) otherwise it takes the project in another direction altogether … it’s not good enough to say that’s how long the conversation or the shot went for … it’s not simply about capturing “reality”, it’s about editing and making tough decisions (maybe the conversation just stops at 1.30 and we never know what else is said it could be more interesting … i don’t know, but that should be part of the challenge that comes with this project and makes you think more laterally) … also many of the other sequences of city life etc exceed the 1:30 limit, but they could easily be shortened and made more concise … this is the only real “rule” that has been set for this project and i think it should be adhered to by one and all.

i totally agree that it’s great people are churning stuff out and being really proactive! it’s a complete revelation for sure!

haha! no offense taken but “fuck the rules” is a cliché usually ejaculated by those who are too lazy to innovate within the parameters … and in terms of monotony, it is completely subjective, your monotony might be another’s sublime …

i’m simply passionate about this project (as you are) … i guess we can “agree to disagree” about the time-frame being a positive rule to feed off and one necessary to keeping this project in check … i’ll admit i’m generally suspicious of those who break the rules “for the sake of breaking rules” or are simply incapable of doing otherwise … no not “lazy” in terms of the subject matter, but in terms of being able to creatively use the time parameter as a jumping off point (which was a core initiative of the project) …

compadres…
love the spat, it’s great because it’s all passion and commitment.
monday we go to STAGE TWO, and things will become a lot clearer and freer. I want to thank you all for your patience— I have a bunch of work to put up (about 6 cuts) and I have been doing the first coding on what will eventually become an online intuitive editing device, key to STAGE FOUR (the penultimate). monday I will post a link to our own webpage. you need to keep uploading to dailymotion for now, but PLEASE keep all your cuts safe, because I am going to ask you to zip em and send em to me very soon.
anyway, like I say, I’ve been out of the loop and incommunicado for a few days now because I am working on other things and infrastructures and architecture and so on.

incidentally… as far as sound design for this project goes… I’m working on something for Olivier Belanger, a kind of system whereby you can draw a line visually across the screen and it creates sound, or chews up (and makes musical) a pre-existent raw sound file (a ‘field recording’ for example. in fact, so far it works better with non-musical sound, which is what I suspected might be the case, and why I stressed the ‘no soundtrack’ rule in the beginning). as and when I get to the point where I think this is ready for release, I’m going to add it to the 05:00 project.

it’s this kind of system that will eventually allow the full democratization of the project. I envision a device whereby we can all cut up and re-order the collective footage individually, and create our soundtracks built out of the diegetic noise inherent in the cuts, save and export, and in this way create a plethora of different ideas and interpretations.

I just got 30 red thumbs in half an hour (sigh). I don’t give a shit about my other posts/reviews, but this project is personal, and the forum posts relating to it are for contributors and those wanting to join.
I’m taking 05:00 off the Auteurs, so that we can work in peace, without approbations and their inverse. I’ll mail all contributors info for the webpage.

it’s a pity. this was such a cool project. good luck with realizing it wherever you go.

this is in no way a condemnation of anything. I think TA is one of the best film sites online. it’s like crack if you love cinema. but this thumb situation is doing my head in. these endless mosquito bites that somehow accumulate into a raging boil.

I just don’t get it. why do we have thumbs? I just don’t get what they are for. so that we can all vote on whose opinion is most hip or ignorant? it seems designed to support statements and not dialogue. judging a statement is a reasonable expectation. you can judge a pronouncement. but you can’t judge an opinion, you can only argue with one. so are they for fun? a bit of healthy competition? but then what am I competing for? because whatever it is, I already won. it makes no sense to me at all.

should 05:00 survive it needs another kind of framework, and all my swearing aside, that’s all that’s really happened here. I don’t like ’em though. I think thumbs are dumb.

you can use any footage that relates to you at this stage. it’s all going to change in a couple of days. get your cuts up. once we close stage one, the focus is going to get a lot sharper, and many things will change, new rules, new restrictions, more freedom. but the questions you get asked to answer get harder, and this will be the make or break of the whole project.

I need to do a lot of fiddlesome work. It’s far from being finished. I’ve only put two cuts up (04:03 and 04:04) as yet: but the rest will be done before you know it. There’s a whole world of functionality and eyecandyness and clever facilitation to come. BUT you get to see how it’s going to work in the next two stages at least, and I think it’s pretty good considering it’s 6 hours from birth to infancy and is already a fully functional CMS site (10pm – 4am, burning the midnight oil— don’t ever tell me I’m not dedicated).

Any filmmaker on this project that I missed in general messaging, contact me and I will send you a log-in/account for the site in the next 24hours, so you can drop comments and so forth. You need to give me your email. I promise faithfully that 05:00 is spam-lite, and virtually fat free apart from the odd update :)

Keep uploading cuts as before (to Dailymotion) —I’ve yet to design an autoloader and such. Eventually, you will take those original cuts and load them into the site direct. I need to move the hosting to MediaTemple at some point, which means the site will probably disappear for about 12 hours while I transfer.

IMPORTANT —Although I said we were ready for Stage Two, this isn’t actually true. I need to see a few more cuts from those amongst us who’ve only made one or two (this includes me) Ideally you should do 3-6 before you jump to the next stage, because it builds on the discipline of Stage One. If you are lagging, you are holding up the project for the others. I’ll accept (for the sake of moving along swiftly) a bare minimum of two, and that’s a pisspoor work ethic concession. If you found Stage One hard going, you are going to have a lot of problems with Stage Two. Don’t try and shirk it. If you got into the rhythm of doing it, it’s going to be much easier at the next level. Bottom line, you get more freedom, but I am going to push you. Push you beyond your comfort zone. It gets more personal, deep under the skin. This is a real film we are making. I am in process of raising money for this. You don’t have to be Orson Welles, but I would like you to start approaching your own far creative horizons. I expect some of you to drop out, which will be sad. When I say “more creative freedom”, don’t imagine that you suddenly get to direct scripts you have written or anything like that. Something along those lines will eventually happen, but not for a coupla stages yet.

Newcomers have to make a bare minimum of Stage One cuts. There is a maximum number of filmmakers on this project now: 13, give or take a few who’ll drop out. We have to finish as a collective of 13 —this is important. So if you see someone fading out, encourage, assist, support. Watch each other’s cuts. Watch them as if they were your own. Because in the end, these cuts make up the film, and it’s your film as much as anyone else’s.

So…
We still need more dialogue. Dialogue captured from life.

As far as breaking the rules goes: I feel about it like this: we have an agenda, which is a kind of realism —or perhaps it might be better said that what we are doing is ground on a bed of realism. You can’t escape that for quite a while. There’s a reason, which when we get to the end will be so f**king obvious, you’ll kick yourself if you didn’t see it coming, and you’ll be asking if you can remake cuts you’ve submitted, etc. There will actually be an opportunity to do this, but don’t count on being able to rework every cut you’ve made. So you see, where Nathan pushes at the time constraint in 04:03, it’s absolutely fine. This is because it’s one take, it’s a great slice of dialogue, and it’s not excessively long. This does not mean you can self-indulge with long montages. It does mean that if on your journey you happen to capture a scene which demands an extra minute or so, then do it. Just don’t overdo it. 90% of what you do should still be within the rules (Stages One and Two). Again, there’s a very simple reason for it, that has to do with logistics and not art as it goes, and you’ll just end up kicking yourself if you rebel for no reason.

also… everybody stop swearing. I know I started it, but that’s because I am a stupid fuck. We’re going to run parallel to The Auteurs in everything we do. So, try not to spike the bloodstream of either site with negativity. Although, quite honestly, I swear like a trooper so I can’t promise I won’t ever say words like fuck and bollocks ever again. But let’s not make this a slang war. Because we are one and the same, two sides of one coin, etc. and anyway, we all love this place, regardless of how many thumbs we have to take in the ass :)

from now on, we are referring to this project as 05:00. it’s wider than the original Garage idea, which is more of an approach, an initial theory than an umbrella concept.

you all should have received a log-in name (please type it exactly, this site is very much in development and its bare functionality demands exactitude) and password.
you can change your password under profile settings. I recommend you do this.
I am working fast to import all the cuts into the site, and to set up a couple of other -pages we will need (a sketchbook and a notebook). once this is done, we can have a big fat pow-wow.
if you didn’t get a password etc, or you have a problem using the project site, message me immediately.

20 spots and four stages to go. …maybe all these numbers add up to something? I warn you, I’m taking 4 of those spots, so you better move. Nathan, thanks for doing this list mate. I still apparently have my stalker, so I’ll speak to you all onsite. 04:05 is fine by me, so let Luis have 04:04

Allison can have 00:04. I’ll take 00:05. MAO can have 00:06

meanwhile, I will have the site finished tomorrow, or at least filled in with all the cuts, and working.
I am scheduling a meeting for friday.
by scheduling I mean I have written it here, so none of you will get this message until saturday probably.
by meeting I mean that I will open a conversation onsite, and expect your input and feedback over the weekend.

all jokes aside, this is very important.
time to argue and vote on one of three (or maybe more) directions we can take with this. and officially, stage two and three begin simultaneously. I’ll explain later. I’m sleepy.
but we’re closer to a wrap faster than I could ever have imagined. you’re all excellent
