Didn’t see BARFLY listed on this thread, although the title was brought up on other threads.

Next Tuesday, 6.30.09, a re-issue of BARFLY goes on sale. Check it out. No word, though, concerning the transfer’s quality.

Something else listed for release next week on Amazon is von Trier’s “Antichrist”. Check out Amazon’s “upcoming releases”. Two versions, no less. One for $21 and the other slightly higher. Both indicate that the discs are region 0.

@andrew wrt “Last Chants for a Slow Dance” – you can get a DVD straight from the filmmaker. His website is www.jon-jost.com. Same goes for the rest of his work, with the exception of a few of his early 90’s work. A long defunct company released some crap DVD’s of some of the following; All the Vermeers in New York, Sure Fire, The Bed You Sleep In + Frame Up. I don’t know if Jost has made better DVD’s to sell. Copyright may prevent him. Of the four, “The Bed You Sleep In” especially suffers, as it’s very much reliant on the detail rich aesthetic of 35mm film. If I could criterionize (new word? lol) one of his films, I’d pick that one.

as for the main topic, off the top of my head;

Hou – Daughters of the Nile (great film that has been skipped over for dvd, no clue why)
Antonioni – Red Desert and Zabriskie Point
James Benning – Anything, he thus far has refused to put his work onto DVD.
Jem Cohen – Chain (not the greatest film wise but the infrastructure porn is too good not to own on DVD)
Robert Bresson – The Devil Probably, A Gentle Creature
Seijun Suzuki – Tokyo Drifter, Branded to Kill (ok, this might not count but lets face it, the criterion discs suck)
Nathaniel Dorsky – Anything (like Benning, he refuses)
Chris Marker – A Day in the Life of Andrei Arsenevich
Andrei Tarkovsky – The Sacrifice (needs a re-release)

some great films have been recently removed from this list for me;

Godard – 2 or 3 Things I Know About Her
Chantal Ackerman – Jeanne Deilman…
Chris Marker – A Grin Without a Cat, some others…

I might be forgetting something.

For those mentioning Ridley’s “The Reflecting Skin”, I just received a copy of it in R1, with stereo sound, so it is available.
‘Lost Cinema’ is the company I got it from.

I’m almost embarrassed… it also qualifies, perhaps, as one of my guilty pleasures: The Stepfather (the 1987 film, with Terry O’Quinn).

There’s a lot, but the two main ones: VIVRE SA VIE and SPLIT SECOND.

God, I love Split Second …

Also, the Third Part of the Night and Possession by Andrzej Zulawski. I think Possession had a US release for a while but went out of print or something.

First let me say that I am not as versed in ‘third world’ cinema as many of you, but I know that its going to be a pain to find a lot of it. I’ve managed to find a good amount of Satyajit Ray’s stuff, but haven’t got into any other Indian film yet, and while I’ve heard about some of the Philipinno filmmakers, I’ve not seen any of their work either. I’ve managed to get a good amount of Mizoguchi and Ozu from England or yesasia, but for the less hardcore, there is no reason why a film like “Life of Ohara” should not be available on region 1 DVD.

aside from Ohara, other masterpieces that I’ve had to track down include Chimes at Midnight which had to be gotten off of Ebay from Brazil, and Macbeth from Korea. I also had to get Bunuel’s masterpiece “Los ovidados” as an import.

Even sadder is that Napoleon, which is inarguably one of the all time great films is only available in the Coppola 3 and a half hour cut, on VHS at your local library.

I am waiting patiently for DVDbeaver’s complete restoration of “Greed” on Blu Ray.

“Wings of Honneamise” is now out of print again.

oh, and most of the Satyajit Ray that I did manage to get, I had to get from the UK..

Ridley Scott’s 1492 is unavailable, so I guess I’ll never know if its any good or not.

Chimes at Midnight is also a good one. Fantastic film.

“1492” is in fact available from the same place where I got “The Reflecting Skin”, in Region 0.
I imagine it’s an international transfer.

If anybody wants any of the following films let me know. I’ve just seen several of these mentioned above. I frequently sell copies of these to buyers in all parts of the world. Most are DVD transfers from VHS. On nearly all of them the quality is really good, even when projected onto a big screen. The silent films are all restored with the correct tinting. I can email you screencaps so you can get an idea of the quality. Send me a message if you are interested and would like more information.

Abel Gance’s NAPOLEON

King Vidor’s THE CROWD / THE BIG PARADE

Erich von Stroheim’s GREED / THE WEDDING MARCH

Rex Ingram’s THE FOUR HORSEMEN OF THE APOCALYPSE

DW Griffith’s INTOLERANCE / THE BIRTH OF A NATION

Raoul Walsh’s THE THIEF OF BAGHDAD

Sam Fuller’s UNDERWORLD USA / VERBOTEN!

Nicholas Ray’s WIND ACROSS THE EVERGLADES / PARTY GIRL / THE LUSTY MEN

Orson Welles’ CHIMES AT MIDNIGHT

Satyajit Ray’s THE MUSIC ROOM

Hugo Fregonese’s THE RAID (a very underrated Western!)

Luis Bunuel’s LOS OLVIDADOS / EL

Pretty much every DVD on that site is either a burned disc with the original region coding removed or sourced from a laserdisc.

Sam, do you know where to find The Crime of Monsieur Lang late 1930’s film by the master Jean Renoir? I can’t find it any where for sale or rent on web—an extraordinary film that is one of Renoir’s best which I saw in mid 1970’s—also Providence by Resnais and The Wedding March by Stroheim that you have listed. Email me on Auteurs or post on my wall at auteurs or even in Forum.

I didn’t read over every post here, but did anyone mention Gillo Pontecorvo’s “Kapo”. It’s a-maz-ing! There is a region 2 disc from Italy, but here in America it’s hard to see. I caught it on TCM a few years ago. I’ve suggested it to the people at Criterion, but I have no clue who owns the American distribution rights.

Already mentioned titles like “Wagon Master” and “The Crowd” need a release too.

I came on here to see how much Stroheim and Wings mentions there would be. You don’t disappoint!
Celine and Julie, too. I need to see this! Is there a torrent?

Also! Lots of great things here… Chimes at Midnight! But you guys are blowing my mind with…
NO KIAROSTAMI MENTION!? It is rather impossible to find Homework, Friend’s House, Olive Trees, etc etc… all of it basically save TEN, ToC, …the Wind…, those Ozu shorts, and the Tickets Shorts. Am I right???

Also, no Sport Sport Sport (Klimov). Not much Klimov anywhere!

The Aerial also does not have a USA release. U-S-A!

“Just about all Satyajit Ray” – isn’t his work fairly readily available (with some notable exceptions)? I know I’ve seen a number of them.

Some others that I’ve either seen through bootleg copies, screeners, retrospectives, or have been unable to find at all:

Goalie’s Anxiety at the Penalty Kick – Wim Wenders
Cul-de-Sac – Roman Polanski
The Shout – Jerzy Skolimoski
Eros + Massacre – Yoshida Yoshishige
Blind Date – Joseph Losey
Drowning by Numbers – Peter Greenaway
Black Moon – Louis Malle
The Mother and the Whore – Jean Eustache
The Hour-Glass Sanatorium – Wojcech Has
Head Against the Wall – Georges Franju
Letters from a Dead Man – Konstantin Lopushansky

Most Nagisa Oshima’s

Ophuls’s Letter From an Unknown Woman and a better edition of Lola Montes; second alot of films already listed (especially the Vidor silents) – it seems that the silent DVD market has been waylaid in the face of the rise of blu-ray

I commented here about 3 months ago concerning the original “The Stepfather,” with Terry O’Quinn in an arresting performance as Jerry Blake. I’m happy to say that it will be released on region 1 DVD sometime around mid October (perhaps to coincide with the release of the remake, hmm?) In any case, this one is a guilty pleasure that I cannot envision being surpassed by any kind of updating.
