Great challenge. One questión before starting: 20 films of 1964 or 20 films from 1964 up to this day?
Tks for clarifying
1964 is not a random choice, it’s probably one of the richest years in the history of cinema. This is a non-exhaustive list of eligible films:
A Hard Day’s Night

Hmm, I have searched IMDB and it gave 1307 results. Think I’ll browse through it first before deciding.
Woman in the Dunes – two points
A Hard Day’s NIght
Kwaidan
Becket
Red Desert
Send Me No Flowers
Band of Outsiders
I think 1966 trumps 1964 http://mubi.com/lists/10002
Dr. Strangelove
Goldfinger
Le journal d’une femme de chambre (Diary of a Chambermaid)
Les parapluies de Cherbourg (The Umbrellas of Cherbourg)
Per un pugno di dollari (A Fistful of Dollars)
Woman in the Dunes
I watched 11 films in total. Below are the 9 films that I liked:
Intentions of Murder – two points
Band of Outsiders
Diary of a Chambermaid
Dr Strangelove
Dry Summer
Gate of Flesh
Kwaidan
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Woman in the Dunes
The other two films that I watched are Onibaba and Red Desert.
Hmm, mubi classified Kwaidan as a 1965 film while IMDB classified it as a 1964 film. Wonder which one is correct?
I was surprised at the choice of 1964 as a good film year until I reviewed a few lists. I enjoyed several films in that year although I watched Diary of a Chambermaid, Gertud, and Onibaba on DVD rather than in a theater,
1. Dr. Strangelove or: How I Learned to Stop Worrying and Love the Bomb
The Pumpkin Eater
King & Country
Marnie
The Gospel According to St. Matthew
One Potato, Two Potato
Séance on a Wet Afternoon
The Pawnbroker
Red Desert
Diary of a Chambermaid
Gertrud
Woman in the Dunes
Nothing But a Man
The Night of the Iguana
T.A.M.I. Show
Nobody Waved Good-bye
Onibaba
The Umbrellas of Cherbourg
Marriage Italian-Style
That Man from Rio
1) Dr. Strangelove…
A Hard Day’s Night
Kwaidan
A Fistful of Dollars
Fail Safe
Beckett
Goldfinger
Mary Poppins
The Best Man
Woman in the Dunes
Colloden
The Naked Kiss
Band of Outsiders
Marnie
Turn out I’ve never seen a film from 1964 that I didn’t really like. While Dr. Strangelove does get my top spot, A Hard Day’s Night is very close behind and would easily be my favorite of most other years.
also a year that delivered us quite possibly the worst film ever made with:
The Creeping Terror
Charulata
Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors
Black God, White Devil
Woman in the Dunes
Forest of the Hanged
Gamlet
The Gospel According to St. Matthew
Gertrud
Diamonds of the Night
Onibaba
A few that haven’t yet been mentioned (except perhaps by MovieGuide1).
Assassination
Before the Revolution
Courage for Every Day
Culloden
Divided Heaven
The Golden Cockerel
I Am Twenty
Pale Flower
Point of Order
Yearning
1- La Peau douce

Kiss Me Stupid
Zuku
Lilith
Red Desert

The Luck of Ginger coffey
Kwaidan
Bande a part
Gertrud
Black God, White Devil
Woman In The Dunes
The Gospel According To Saint Matthew
Shadows Of Forgotten Ancestors
Intentions Of Murder
Dr. Strangelove Or: How I Stopped Worrying and Love The Bomb
Charulata
A Hard Day’s Night
The Umbrellas Of Cherbourg
Wow, you’re not kidding. Great year. Of course a good number of these may not have hit our shore [the US] exactly in 1964 – but in retrospect it’s a great year. I just recently watched Black God White Devil and Red Desert. Two completely different films on all levels but both works of art.
Dr Strangelove…
Red Desert
Black God White Devil
Onibaba
Band of Outsiders
I am Cuba
The Train
Scorpio Rising
Woman in the Dunes
Soft Skin
The Killers
Getrud was released in its home country in 1965. According to IMDB it was release in Dec 1964 in Paris. So technically, okay.

1) The Gospel According to Saint Matthew
-A Hard Day’s Night
-Dr. Strangelove
-Marnie

Don’t think I can vote in this one. The only ones I’ve seen are Dr Strangelove, Mary Poppins, A Hard Day’s Night and Goldfinger, and the only one of those adult me likes is Dr Strangelove.
Tons of those are on my list though.
1. A Hard Day’s Night (Richard Lester)
2. Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors (Sergei Paradjanov)
3. Pale Flower (Masahiro Shinoda)

17. 7 Faces of Dr. Lao (George Pal)
18. The Naked Kiss (Sam Fuller)
19. The Gorgon (Terrence Fisher)
20. Red Desert (Michelangelo Antonionni)
Thank you all so far, this works!
Note: Establishing some films’ opening dates would be problematical, I have adopted the year of first public release (festival screenings don’t count).

Invitation to a game:
What I’m asking you to do is to fill a ballot with some titles of your own choice. 1964 must be the year of first public release.
- Each person votes for up to 20 movies. Do not feel compelled to fill the maximum allowable number, only true favorites.
- There is no need to rank the films except the number 1, it gets two points.
- You may change your ballot as many times as you’d like.
A certain standardization of the outcome is predictable, but it is not our goal to establish a Canon. It’s just a game and individual votes are the true centers of attraction.
Results will be presented in a specially created Movie List.
Thank you in advance for joining us in this game.
