I beginning to think Yentl might just have a place on the MOST DIVISIVE FILMS thread! :-)

For what it’s worth I did like Risky Business when I saw it back in ’83 but repeat viewings have made me think I must have been VERY high at the time. Props to Curtis Armstrong and Bronson Pinchot however who steal every scene their in.

Let me add that when I said “Carroll Ballard can do no wrong” I must have been suppressing all memory of the fiasco Wind (1992),a movie where he can do no right. The only blight on his otherwise faultless career.

1. Sans Soleil (Chris Marker)
2. Videodrome (David Cronenberg)
3. Local Hero (Bill Forsythe)
4. King of Comedy (Martin Scorsese)
5. “It’s a Good Life” (Joe Dante)
6. Confidentially Yours (Francois Truffaut)
7. Zelig (Woody Allen)
8. L’Argent (Robert Bresson)
9. Scarface (Brian De Palma)
10. Christine (John Carpenter)
11. “Nightmare at 20,000 Feet” (George Miller)
12. Strange Invaders (Michael Laughlin)
13. Rock & Rule (Clive Smith)
14. The Dead Zone (David Cronenberg)
15. Trading Places (John Landis)
16. Wild Style (Charlie Ahern)
17. Return of the Jedi (Richard Marquand)
18. The Right Stuff (Philip Kaufmann)
19. The Deadly Spawn (Douglas McKeown)
20. Valley Girl (Martha Coolidge)

Given how awful the first two segments of Twilight Zone: The Movie are, I can’t see my way to including the whole movie on the list, but I love the second two segments, thus their inclusion as separate short film entries.

Agreed. I couldn’t bring myself to vote for Twilght Zone: The Movie either (John Landis has a special place in hell waiting for him for his role in the multiple on-set killings) but the Joe Dante and George Miller episodes are superb.

A weak year, hard to find 20 really good films among the 139 seen. 1945 looks more promising.

Oxymoron

I know this is a list thread, not a discussion thread, but as this is nearly over, I am sad that so few put Nostalghia as their top pick, even though many did include it on their picks for the year. Clearly, Sans Soleil seems the winner here.

For those that haven’t seen Nostalghia, but like Tarkovsky’s other films, I urge you to see and consider Nostalghia. Of his major films, it is perhaps Tarkovky’s least understood and appreciated release. It doesn’t even have a decent region 1 DVD release. I love the film, but can’t make others do the same. I find it fits in perfectly with the mood and tone of Stalker and The Sacrifice.

Nostalghia is also a film concerned with the metaphysics of sacrifice in a corrupt world – if we can greatly over-simplify. Both the candle-in-the-wind episode in the deserted pool and the man who sets himself on fire (notice how Tarkovsky uses fire as a sort of purification motif in film after film?) represent an attempt to achieve some manner of spiritual harmony/cleasing through sacrifice that will help ‘save’ the world.

Give it a try and see if it doesn’t tie-in with Tarkovsky’s other films in terms of symbol and feel. I personally find Sans Soleil a much simpler film to understand than Nostalghia.
