IMDB is flaky on release years, but it’s the official reference for these polls. So check titles there if you’re not sure.
A bunch of titles have shown up in this thread that IMDB lists as 91 or 93, many of which I would have picked if IMDB had them as 92.Can I redo my list? I was looking at some of the other lists and realizing that the sources that I used did not include some of the best films of 92, mainly because they had small releases or perhaps weren’t even released in the US.
1) The Player
Army of Darkness
Benny’s Video
Braindead
Chaplin
Forbidden Love
Glengarry Glen Ross
Hard Boiled
Leolo
Lessons of Darkness
Life and Nothing More
The Living End
The Long Day Closes
Man Bites Dog
Night on Earth
Reservoir Dogs
Rock Hudson’s Home Movies
Single White Female
Unforgiven
La Vie de Boheme
Again, for counting purposes, this is a redo of my earlier list.
A couple notes.
This is sort of tricky because I live in the US so I rank movies by when they were released in NY and LA. But I’ll make an exception with astericks.
1) Il ladro di bambini*
All the Vermeers in New York**
American Dream
Bad Lieutenant
Bitter Moon*
Un Coueur En Hiver*
The Crying Game
Hard Boiled*
Highway Patrolman
Last of the Mohicans
Leolo
Laws of Gravity
The Long Day Closes*
One False Move
The Player
The Quince Tree Sun**
Raise the Red Lantern
Simple Men
Strictly Ballroom*
Unforgiven
[Un Coueur En Hiver opened in 1993 in the US
Hard Boiled opened in 1993 in the US
Il ladro di bambini opened in 1993 in the US
The Long Day Closes opened in 1993 in the US
Strictly Ballroom opened in 1993 in the US
Bitter Moon opened in 1994 in the US
All The Vermeers in New York opened theatrically everywhere in 1992
The Quince Tree Sun opened everywhere except Spain in 1993.]
I think Raise the Red Lantern is 91, cause it would be at the Top of My List for 92
I forgot Dust Devil (thought it was 91) please place Richard Stanley’s Dust Devil at number 1
if raise the red lantern is out i will replace it with one false move d. franklin
Yeah, it’s 1991 according to imdb.
@ Matt L.
For simplicity’s sake, we agreed to use the date listed in imdb for the purposes of these polls.

I understand.
You see how it gets tricky though, right?
For instance, when this year comes to an end many will make ‘best of’ lists. But we cannot very well put films on our lists if we have not yet seen the film due to the fact that it has not been released in our country. And, to add another wrinkle, we will also probably put films on our lists that technically came out last year in Europe or elsewhere.
A good example is Godard’s ‘Film socialisme’. I recently watched it. It will probably make my ten best list. But technically it is a 2010 film. However, it would be sort of pointless to go back and amend my 2010 list. Especially since it actually might not make my 2010 list – which is another argument.
But, yeah, I get it. I just like to note release dates. A really good example is Memento. It was made in 2000 and played some festivals. Then it played in 2001 in Sundance and received rave reviews and distribution rights. It then went around the world in 2001 and thus made it on a bunch of 2001 lists. But years later people will get confused and put it as a 2000 film, which really isn’t correct since it’s impact was clearly felt in 2001.
I must see Avetik.
I’m the only vote so far for Hedd Wyn.
“Mae’r hen delynau genid gynt
Ynghrog ar gangau’r helyg draw,
A gwaedd y bechgyn lond y gwynt,
A’u gwaed yn gymysg efo’r glaw.”
The old harps that were played before are
Suspended on the branches of yonder willows,
And the scream of the boys filling the wind,
And their blood mixed with the rain.
Great year.
