The Academy gave the Best Picture award to The Return of the King, not the previous two. They certainly had the option of awarding each installment with a Best Picture nod, but chose not to. If the question is “Officially, what year is The Lord of of the Rings?” I still contend that it can only be 2001, 2002, 2003.

What is the year we “officially” give to The Lord of the Rings? In that all 3 LOTR films were done at once – unlike, say, The Godfather films, or even series’ like Harry Potter – I count the three as one big film. The Academy and many other groups apparently viewed it this way, too, and lavished the much deserved praise at the end of the installments.
It is a monumental and unique undertaking and it deserves a superior spot on any fields of praise.
I agree. For me The Lord of the Rings or Kill Bill are one film split for commercial reasons. Anyway, and to keep things simple, we will follow the IMDb:
The Fellowship of the Ring – 2001
The Two Towers – 2002
The Return of the King – 2003
Kill Bill: Vol. 1 – 2003
Kill Bill: Vol. 2 – 2004
Kill Bill: Vol. 1
21 Grams
American Splendor
The Animatrix
Dogville
Good Bye Lenin!
House of Sand and Fog

Oldboy

Finding Nemo
Harvie Krumpet
Return of the King (damn haters)
A Tale of Two Sisters
Not really a great year, but has probably the third best film of the decade and pixar’s second best.
When does this poll end? I am still watching/rewatching.

I agree this isn’t the greatest of film years. Lots of films I ‘liked’ not a whole lot that I ‘loved’ …Even ATRG which I adored for a long time is souring because of DG Green’s career choices (The Sitter?!). Dude needs to get out of LA.
Please add Saraband – Bergman to my list. Finally got arouind to seeing this, thanks to the World Cup.
I find these lists valuable for picking up films one may have missed and also films one may not have run into yet. Glad we have so many into international film releases, as I am always checking what others submit. That’s why I think lists can be of help for discovering new film possibilities. Love the List feature and the many, many great lists on mubi, too! Don’t Stop the Lists! just yet…Thanks MovieGuide1 and all submitters to these polls.
This poll will remain open until Saturday, 9.
Then we’ll do 1925 and 1960.
Some highly regarded films this year that were not for me, but some lesser-known items that were, including works by Coen and Jewison, directors I usually don’t care for. For the top of my list, one of my all-time favorites that gives me the thrill of movie-going that I experienced as a ten-year old, even through my present jaded eyes.
