Doinel and Jack,
I liked the performance of the actress who played the mother in Frozen River, but I didn’t care for the acting of the other actors (particularly the mother’s son and the mother’s Native American “partner in crime”).
Jon,
I thought Two Lovers was a decent film. I like Joaquin and Gwyneth as actors.
Melissa Leo is a fuckin’ talented character actress and i’d wish she had played in more leading roles.
Doinel,
Was the Four Lives in the Bebop Business written by Amri Baraka (Leroi Jones)? If so, how was it?
Stephen,

Sekz,
I just finished The Road. How’d you like it?
I read Watership Down a few years ago, and I loved it. Adams creates a pretty rich world, and there some of the most exciting segments in anything I’ve read.
I loved The Road, I read it in 3 days and I had it in my mind for weeks. Its a very personal book. Howd you like it?
Watership Down is amazing. My second fav book of all time, right behind The Hobbit. The world is rich and the story lends itself to Adams’ style, hes a genius.
Jazzaloho — Four Lives in the Bebop Business was written by A.B. Spellman.
It had been out of print for some time and it is available now on Amazon.
Features Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman, Herbie Nichols and Jackie McClean.
Cecil talking about how much Stockhausen sucks, Ornette talking about the problems of playing the white club scene and getting ripped off by the owner of the Five Spot, McClean primarily talks about the problem with drugs and Nichols, who was widely ignored is a tragic figure.
Highly recommended
Oops, my mistake about Spellman.
Thanks for the description. I think they have that one at the local library, so maybe I’ll check it out. I do have some of Herbie Nichols’ stuff. Several years ago there was some renewed interest in his music.

1. Favorite 2009 film
Tough to say but I think I’ll go with “Observe and Report”
2. 2009 film(s) that you strongly recommend to other people on this site
“Star Trek” – I’m sure many of you have seen this but if you shied away from it simply because it’s a Hollywood movie, you’re doing yourself much harm. This movie is nearly flawless and I’ve never even seen a Star Trek movie before so I’m hardly a fan.

“La Haine” – No explanation needed here

“Funny People” – It got slept on hard and many people hated it because they thought it was going to be a comedy. Throw away all of your expectations and simply watch the movie for what it is.
