2010 World Cup

That tie wasn’t so bad…

Rock and Bull

Ha, all this time I thought this was a film world cup.

I think S. Africa tightened up when it got even. They started playing to preserve the tie rather than being aggressive for a win. That was probably a natural reaction from them. Not so bad. There’s plenty of tournament left. I’m sure they’re extremely happy to get out of the first match with a point and a goal.

The guy who hit the post looked devastated.

After shooting through the legs of the goalie no less.

I put money on Mexico for the whole cup. That defence looked awfully leaky, unfortunately.

The couple of St Andrews crosses prominent behind the French and Uruguayan teams during the national anthems are the extent of the Scottish involvement in the cup. I suddenly feel bereft.

South Africa kept the record up of the home country never losing the opening match, they deserved to win though.

Let’s watch France litterally getting their ass kicked by the aggressive Uruguay (who actually has more world cup titles)

Dreadful miss by Govou on that Ribery cross early on.

so far a 50-50 match, i can see a Forlan waving across the defense, hopefully…..

Bobby Wise

Henry is going to enter the game and strike a nice one. Watch…

My wife is going crazy because of the ‘buzzing bees’.

rko281

I’m not sure which is the more annoying thing in football: knife wielding Italian ultras or the vuvuzela.

Dimitris Psachos

Henry did nothing to help poor, wretched France, nor any other “big name” (Ribery was pathetic)

a pity Suarez didn’t slide alone for once, and those Forlan shots, dammit…

Alfredo G

I turned the sound off completely because of the vuvuzelas and just put on French and Uruguayan music. Watching the game to the sounds of Catherine Ribeiro and Carlos Canzani actually enhanced my enjoyment of an otherwise ugly match.

A yawner.

My wife is also irritated by the buzzing bees, well me too really, that constant drone doesn’t reflect on anything in the match. I prefer to hear the crowd getting involved and excited and singing. Group 1 no great shakes, and England’s group probably not the strongest, not that i’d write anyone off in it. Uruguay have 2 goal scorers but neither is really a creator and they lack a midfield general with flair but they tried hard. France v Uruguay is regularly 0-0.

Bobby Wise

Pretty ugly match, and Ribery didn’t do anything at all. Oh well. It’s a point!

I had picked Mexico and South Africa to win their group before the WC started, and I reaffirm that prediction.

GO Argentina.Would love to see a France vs Argentina final.

Kenji

Mexico and S.Africa will need to tighten up their defences, Ralch. France still have some class but don’t excite me enough for me to want them to go far

Shakti

“France v Uruguay is regularly 0-0.”

I believe this was only their 4th official competition match. France have never beaten Uruguay.

24 Olympics Uruguya 5 / France 1
66 WC Uruguay 2 / France 1
02 WC Uruguay 0 / France 0

The France V Uruguay game was dull as sin. All roads lead to England Vs U.S.A, which should be 2-1 to England. It helps that many of the U.S.A team play in the English Premiership, which will mean it won’t be a walk over. Spain should win the final playing Brazil. England will probably finish fourth, beaten either by Spain or Brazil.

Kenji

Shakti, the last friendly match between France + Uruguay was also 0-0

Bobby Wise

Oh yeah! I’m getting excited for tomorrow night. Not only is the US not a walk-over, I fully expect us to win or tie against England.

Dimitris Psachos

it would be great to see an upset victory of U.S.A. over England tomorrow. come to think of it, i wouldn’t really want England passing the next round, DOWN with the biggies!!!

that second match today had been pretty mediocre for the most part but it was far better than their last encounter in 2002.

Bof. I even forget they were playing and they start with a tie, I don’t seem to have missed much. I WILL NOT waste a Saturday watching the national loobies play another bunch of less experienced loobies. I’ll start into this on Sunday.

This time I vow to figure out the offside rule.

You won’t win against England. None of the U.S.A team can be deemed ‘world class,’ whereas most of the England squad share comparisons with the world’s finest. You might sneak a draw (not a tie, a tie is the match itself, not the score.) Dempsey and Donovan are your best hopes, especially as they play for the English Premiership, ranked as the best in the world, (based mainly on the very fast pace of the English game) even though Barcelona is probably the best regional team in the world.

The World Cup truly encompasses the world, not the World Series, which is just wishful thinking! The U.S might be the world’s policeman, but that has nothing to do with sport.

For a country that doesn’t embrace football, not soccer, ranked as 14th is pretty impressive. It would be even more impressive if TV companies in the U.S would actually respect the 45 minute-without-ads rule and not demand FIFA to widen the goals, hence why football isn’t as big as it could be with better TV coverage. Certain things remain sacred. Low scores, a la football are also not attractive to the U.S sports psyche, as most of the U.S sports are high scoring.

Looks like Thierry Henry will be heading to the U.S to see out the rest of his career, unless West Ham make it worth his while. At least that should raise the profile of football in the U.S.
