Terrible choices. Toy Story 3? Black Swan?
Toy Story 3 is one of the most entertaining films of the year. I don’t see a problem with a family film not having art value. Take it for what it is.
What I don’t like is having ten nominees.I like having five. The five films earned the nomination because they were the best out of that year, having the ten is just the oscars trying to get more viewers to watch by nominating more mainstream films. With the more familiar films and the number of nominees it makes it more exciting for some viewers.
With ten films being nominated more smaller films that are high quality films unfortunatly will not receive a nomination because it will lose it to a mainstream film that has good performances when the smaller ones might have great performance and no mainstream appeal.
Couldn’t they think of something more sensible to do with 100000 bucks? Like, investing into independent cinema funding? Who even cares about the Oscars anymore?
the oscars are the pinnacle of filmmaking :O(
I was glad to see The Social Network go so well up till now and I hope it will end up with many Oscars, as it deserves to.I’m also glad to see the Cohens back in the race, as I believe they are among the greatest of our times. Yet I consider it scandalous that Polanski and Scorcese are left out of the nominations. Especially The Ghost Writer is such a certain gem that in a perfect world would win every award about everything. This film of the decade didn’t get no credit (at least it was awarded in the European awards), reminding us that we shouldn’t care much for the Oscars anyway!
i also wondered about the ghost writer and shutter island not nominated
maybe they were forgotten about because they were released just before last years ceremony?
Shutter Island was very divisive, with about as many people hating it and loving it. Polanski’s off-screen issues killed any chance Ghost Writer might have had.
Polanski’s off-screen issues didn’t keep him from winning in ’02. Both films, though, will age pretty well
The problem with the Oscars has a lot to do with all of the awards that are given BEFORE them. By the time Academy voters get their ballots, the races have been whittled down to a small handful of films or performances, and they are left picking winners rather than voting for their favorites. If a film like ‘Shutter Island’ or ‘Ghost Writer’ hasn’t gained traction in the “precursor” awards, voters might choose to go with something else rather than waste a vote. If the Oscars want to mean something more, they should move up to where they are the first awards handed out in “awards season”, and therefore aren’t influenced by critics or guilds
When Polanski won for The Pianist, it was a 25 year old controversey that hadn’t been in the public eye. His recently being held for extradition brought it back to the front pages.
Even so, had ‘The Ghost Writer’ won a critcs’ award or two, I think it would have been nominated for Oscar (especially with ten nominees). Once again, it failed to do so, and therefore many voters threw their support behind films they felt had a chance
he has a new movie coming with Jodie Foster.
He will be an academy darling next year.
Jodie Foster hasn’t been in favor (box-office, critically, or awards-wise) in a LONG time. Her inclusion in a picture once gave it awards pedigree and prestige. It now counts for squat.
I can’t wait to see if Natalie Portman wins. I have my fingers crossed for her.
Black Swan should be up for best original screen play.
I still have a lot of the films to see. Toy Story 3 was enjoyable and entertaining, but overrated. In fact, it was so damn melodramatic, it actually made me like the film less. I realized they used Bob Mckee’s method on the screenplay, but seriously….
I’d like to see “Toy Story 3” winning the Best Picture award. After all, Hollywood has been playing with the moviegoers and treating the like children for so many years, it’s at least honest to award that picture :)
I don’t think that it was the best film of the year but Toy Story 3 was a thousand times better than The Kids are alright and Winter’s Bone put together. I’m positive that Social Network will win but it would have been more interesting to see Inception win. I haven’t seen the King’s speech or Black Swan yet so I can’t comment on those.
Ghost Writer was one of Polanski’s worst, and Shutter Island was Scorsese’s VERY worst. I’m a fan of both directors, but these were minor efforts at best. They are nothing compared to, say, Chinatown or Raging Bull.
Ghost Writer and Shutter Island were both excellent films in my opinion. You are wrong to me.
I cannot stress much enough how excellent I consider Shutter island and, especially, The ghost writer, which I think comes to team with Chinatown as one of Polanski’s finest moments (although my favorite of them all is Cul-de-sac ).I watched True grit and it was a bit of a disappointment when compared with A serious man, although it wasn’t really bad;but apart from the last twenty minutes the film suffered from lack of pace and too much talk.Yet it succeded in having the old western genre revisited,if from another point of view.
No doubt “King’s speech” is the winner. And Natalie Portman is the best actress. Let’s see:)
warner merchandise and “the dark nolan” good will and the juggernaut that “the king speech” seems to be…

i will make the bet that jacki weaver will win supporting actress. the deductions of the other 4 nominees are as follows:
amy adams and melissa leo up for the same film will cancel each other out
hailee steinfeld is too young, and it’s her 1st film so give her some time
helena bonham-carter is in the best picture favorite but isn’t a standout (though i might be wrong)
My picks for the oscars
Actor-Firth
Actress-Portman
Sup. Actor-Rush
