2012 London Olympics

No one’s interested in talking about the Olympics? I don’t have TV and I can’t watch the Olympics online, so I don’t have a lot of opportunities. I did get to watch the U.S. women’s volleyball team play Brazil today. I like volleyball, and plus Lindsey Berg is from Hawai’i, so that’s an extra reason to watch and root for them.

Would love to talk Olympics. I’m really enjoying watching the weightlifting and the swimming. Always enjoy Olympic boxing. Wish I could see the US bball team. Somehow I never get the chance during any Olympics to see them. Are they never programmed on tv or something?

Oddly my favorite thing to watch so far has been women’s kayaking. It’s pretty cool.

I’ve been watching it all (except soccer and basketball) . I rarely watch anything else during Olympic time :)

Ouch! No, I didn’t see him break his elbow. I saw a few arm injuries, but nothing severe.

On a random note, no wonder Phelps has so many medals. There are a million swimming competitions! All kidding aside, congratulations to the most decorated Olympian in history.

U…S…A!!!

Today’s the day for track and field! Real, iconic Olympic competition. Not table tennis or roller derby.

I’ve never seen anything more dominant in tennis than what Serena just did to Sharapova in that first set.

Finally got to watch Team USA play bball. Lithuania scared me. But I had a feeling they were too hot in the first half and would cool down sooner or later. They just didn’t have enough gas in the tank to beat the good ol US. But the final stats showed they shot almost 60% for the game. Wow. That’s how good the US team is. You can shoot about 60% from the field, score close to 100 points, and still lose by almost double digits!

I’ve been so busy, just watching events mostly on reruns.
The US hoops team needed a challenge like the one presented by Lithuania. Great game, and for a while there even the NBA stars were having a hard time stopping those pick-n-rolls.

Women’s Tennis, that was a total beatdown. Serena baked a steaming hot bagel for Sharapova.

Field Hockey is another event worth following, esp. after Netherlands’ 3-1 upset of Germany

England followed the script and crashed again on PKs. The So. Koreans played much better anyways, who also gave a demo on how to convert effective penalty kicks. With Japan-Mexico/ So. Korea-Brasil the football semifinals and the finals look very promising.

I haven’t been watching but I hear Brasil has scored at least 3 goals in every match so far. Maybe we should start being afraid for World Cup 2014.

Watched the 100m qualifiers today. Bolt came in at under 10 seconds without really trying. I like the way the US runners looked. It will be a great final, but I don’t know if Bolt is beatable.

Bolt set a new Olympic record. Solidified his place in history too. Watching him and Phelps this Olympics is pretty special.

i was pleased for Jessica Ennis, Mo Farah (who seem nice) and Bradley Wiggins, but I’m sick and tired of the jingoism in UK. The media have gone into propaganda overdrive, the BBC News channel is virtually continuous flag-waving Olympic coverage, as if nothing else in the world matters any more, and this gold medal rush is the greatest thing ever to happen. Won’t stop the mass obesity though. Never in the history of sporting endeavour have so few been so unrepresentative of so many (along with the USA). Disappointed Federer lost the final but glad he got silver and extended his #1 rank at least. Murray now seems more widely accepted as British. The rabid rightwing English gutter press slagged off Welsh footballers for not singing God save the Queen!

Bolt was a highlight.

I’m now thinking of taking up Taekwondo, there’s something appealing about it

Why, because she’s Welsh? Heehee!

Ahem, I’m 51, best put it down to Welshness alone. The last 3 decades have gone in a flash, in my mind i’m still 22- should be leaping through the air, not this decrepit wreck.

— I am a gentleman in a dustcoat trying
To make you hear. Your ears are soft and small
And listen to an old man not at all,
They want the young men’s whispering and sighing.
But see the roses on your trellis dying
And hear the spectral singing of the moon;
For I must have my lovely lady soon,
I am a gentleman in a dustcoat trying.

— I am a lady young in beauty waiting
Until my truelove comes, and then we kiss.
But what grey man among the vines is this
Whose words are dry and faint as in a dream?
Back from my trellis, Sir, before I scream !
I am a lady young in beauty waiting.

The late film critic Gilbert Adair gave up his column in The Independent cos, he said, he’d fallen in love with Zhang Ziyi. I for one didn’t blame him.

Argh! U.S. Women’s Volleyball team lose in the gold medal match. Man, I’m really bummed.. It’s a good thing I didn’t watch that match. Aloha to Lindsey, Tama, and all the U.S. woman. Congrats to Brazil.

I’ve been thinking about this whole Olympics thing. Why is it important to win a gold medal? Or any medal? Why is it important that athletes do well at the olympics? What difference does it make to a country if their athletes win a bunch of medals or don’t win any? I don’t get it.

i find i don’t enjoy watching them as much as i did as a kid. nationalism is nearly as evil as racism and often virtually the same thing. i am happy for the athletes who don’t normally get this kind of attention though

Kenji

Yeah, the media in UK, and i suspect many other countries, focus too much on own nationality competitors. What should matter more than medals is the overall health and fitness of a nation, of all nations. USA wins gold for obesity, UK fighting it out for silver. Nice work, Maggie and Ronnie!

I was quite pleased- not jumping up and down excited- about Welsh medals, i was pleased for Jade Jones anyway. But i think it was mainly relief so the English wouldn’t come out with the usual put-downs. That gets my back up, to go with the chip on the shoulder. Some countries like to play the superiority game, others just to be considered equals (or they should, and nothing more) . In UK, the big county of Yorkshire is claiming top bragging rights, ahead of Scotland. I hear in the US it’s some college in Florida, Gators. The BBC news lied that UK had won most medals per capita, that’s how far they’ve dumbed down.

Most countries didn’t win a medal and why the hell should they be considered in any way inferior? Mainly they didn’t have the money or will to plough into prestige, when other things matter. It wouldn’t be so bad if all the competitive nationalism was safely channelled into the Olympics but many countries that take sports rankings seriously- including the top ones in the medals table- are pretty good at attacking and taking over others too. Nationalism and TV together the opium of the masses. And in UK, Elizabeth Saxe-Coburg-Gotha-Windsor and heroic soldiers, ripe for adulation…

The great UK flag-waving summer may be coming to an end- we’ve had the Olympic torch, the jubilee, England in Euro 12, Murray in Wimbledon final, now this. I’ve seen enough union flags to last 100 lifetimes.

I thoroughly enjoyed the Olympics this year. I think it was the first time that I watched the games every day. See you in 4 years in Brasil! Speaking of which, this is their decade. The World Cup in 2014 and the Olympics in 2016. Think the football team won’t be looking for redemption on their home turf in both cases? Be prepared.

I don’t know, I like rooting for USA, and really enjoyed the Olympics. But I guess that makes me evil. But on the plus side, since I’m already evil, I can let out all the racism I’ve been holding inside for years.
