Blue, thank you so much. I’m sure a few of yours will make it.

Deadline is approaching folks. Please get your list to me before the day is over if you haven’t already.

OK, the deadline is up for sending me yourlists. However if you did submit a list please be checking your messages regularly the next couple of days. I am going through the lists and may need some follow up with many of you.

After that I will work on getting more info posted about the cup and announce some of the first matches.

Thanks so much for all of your contributions and enthusiasm!

So it looks like I’m going to have submissions for well more than 51 countries. What do you all say to me including as many countries as I can, even if it makes the voting schedule a little more intense. Things always end up getting bigger than you expected them to…. !

Uli Cain, Cinefidel¹³

Well, if you got 64, then that’s works out nicely

Ari

Yeah, what countries are you missing?

herb shellenberger

I quite liked the promise of a less intense voting schedule. For a country to qualify it has to have three picks, correct?

Autumn Leaf

I’m fine with a more intense voting schedule. It’s not like we have to vote in every match: we can just watch as many films for this as our lives allow :)

i was looking forward to a relaxing schedule too…but..if you were to limit the countries picked now, how would you do it? the least submitted ones are also the ones that need the most exploring…

If I was going to exclude some, yes it would be the ones that didn’t have enough films to compete after the first round of lists received.

I’m actually following up with people right now for a second round of lists, so as it’s going forward I may be able to include most of those still.

I was really liking the idea of a more relaxed voting schedule. I think even if we end up using almost all of the countries submitted the number of films used will still be less than any of the three cups up to this point, but it will still be longer than I had originally anticipated. It’s very hard for me at this point to turn anyone away though. Lots of exciting stuff coming in.

I’m not going to try to see as many films this year as the last two years. I really want to catch up on my backlog and get to know the films I already discovered better. But I’ll try to participate as much as my schedule allows.

Riss, I’m curious what mechanic you’re using. It’s obviously not a simple elimination. I remember the system you proposed last year where we have two matches and go with highest percentage across both matches to determine advancement, so I assumed this system would be along those lines. Are you now leaning toward a more elimination oriented system?

Risselada

Oh I know you are curious Jirin, but was hoping not to reveal the exact mechanics. I thought it would make it more interesting. What do you think?

toodead

so i guess riss has decided to let us know historias extraordinarias is in the cup. yay! one 4 hour film i don’t have to watch! my schedule is relaxed already. plus. that film is awesome.

voting secrets thread, riss!

Hahaha, you people pick things up quick! Yeah I had to put at least one film in that list for it to let me create it. I’ll tell you right now it was the film that had the most people submit it. Five people submitted that film. It’s not actually guaranteed to be in the cup yet though. Other Argentina films could be instead. I haven’t done the draw for the films yet. But with five people submitting it has a good chance.

While we are waiting for the final list from Riss, can we post our individual lists? It’d be fun to see them, plus we’d also know where to place the blame.

I’d really rather you didn’t, because I’d like to keep some things surprises, but I guess I can’t stop you.

toodead

yeah not yet vikram! i don’t want to be prejudiced about a film because i know some bastard suggested it. (though i don’t even know if any bastards might have suggested a list, too busy posting reactionary and vile opinions on the internet i guess)

plus it’s easier concentrating all the blame on riss at this point ;)

Yes, whatever happens, it’s all Riss’ fault.

Well, if any vile American blockbuster made the list, it’s this bastard that submitted it just to start a fight with Blue. ;p

I’ve received a total of 663 different films from amongst 48 different people who submitted lists. Now on to the next stage of putting these lists through my impartial selection process. I hope to have some matches posted within the next day or two.

^^

yessssssssssssssssssssssssssssssss

Well, if any vile American blockbuster made the list, it’s this bastard that submitted it just to start a fight with Blue. ;p

Uli,

At least 320 of my 1278 “favorite” films on my MUBI profile are bona fide American, accounting for more than 25%, far far far more than any other nation. I have zero issues with the national origin of a film. You do. Not me. Commercialism, on the other hand, is a different issue.

So just let it go. I know you were trying to make a joke, but that horse has been beaten to death, buried, then disinterred, beaten again, and then cremated and its ashes thrown all over into oblivion. You have an issue with what you imagine to be my bias against American films. Again, let it go as it’s all in your imagination.

If you have an undying desire to continue this topic, we can revisit it again once at least 25% of your favorite films come from outside the anglophone world.

Uli Cain, Cinefidel¹³

I don’t care at all where films come from, I just see the films I see. If something catches my fancy, I’ll watch it, if it doesn’t, I won’t.

People like you scream about countries and discovery, I say watch films. You love to queer the fact that some people choose films differently than you do and love to point out a supposed lack of diversity, but the case is ample, your way isn’t best, my way isn’t best, they are just the way things are. You aren’t a better person for your view, I’m not a better person for mine, we’re just different.

Umm, of course what films one watches has nothing to do with a person’s worth. Let’s get off the obvious cliches.

Just let go of your obsession with this idea that I have this anti-American bias. What is wrong with you? You’re the one who constantly talks about this supposed anti-American bias that I and some others have. I watch films from everywhere, and I watch more films from America than films from any other single nation. More of my favorite films come from America than any other nation. There is no anti-American bias here.

How hard is it for you to understand most basic logic? My argument is not “I hate American movies.” My argument is “don’t assume that American cinema is the default framework to talk about cinema.” That is an entirely different argument.

You choose to see an “anti-American” bias because your frame of reference is American cinema. I’m arguing for the ABSENCE of any particular national perspective. Do you really not get that?

Uli Cain, Cinefidel¹³

American cinema isn’t the default framework to talk about cinema, no one country has that and shouldn’t have that. So what’s the argument here?

And I fuck with on the anti-American bias ‘cause it’s fun to watch you overreact.
