2012 MUBI World Cup - match announcements

Oh my gosh, one of my three nominations is up first? Somewhat tense..I hope people enjoy it! :)

Risselada, are we allowed to vote in matches in which a film we nominated is competing? I don’t see why not, seeing as no one is actually managing any of the countries.

Yes. Anyone can vote, even the people who submitted the films.

Thank you! I like to make it look pretty :)

It looks wonderful. Fantastic work, Riss. Pity about the countries (and the great films submitted) that didn’t made the cut. I think that from those titles alone, we could have had already a spectacular Cup. Naderi Vs. Pita & Veroiu…wow!!!

Maybe I missed something, but I still have no link for Lust for Gold.

Jerry, it’s not up yet. I’m waiting for someone to present me with one. If no one offers to, I’ll have to upload it myself, but I hope I won’t have to do all of them.

Riss- give the selectors advance notice of a matched film so that we can get the films streaming ourselves. Nobody expects you to do all of them.

I’ve started Lust for Gold…beautiful film. If anyone can give some historical context (my ignorance of this time and place is complete), it would be greatly appreciated.

I will. I’m still working on some preliminary things, but things will start to get more efficient. You’ll get some time.

Get accustomed to seeing the name “kuxa kanema” quite a bit. He submitted far more films than anyone else, and there are several countries that are in the cup solely from his submissions.

The first match doesn’t start until February 27. Hold your horses until then and I’ll post a topic where you can vote. :D

Taiwan vs Bangladesh? Fantastic! And it’s rare enough to hear much talk of a Taiwanese film that isn’t associated with Tsai, Hou or Yang. Can’t wait for this match.

Wow I knew I submitted a fair few films but I didn’t think many of them would appear!! Well I am just glad to be supporting some of the smaller countries in this tournament and Bangladesh happens to be the first. Well Clay Birds is a lovely small film and has lots going for it… Very interested in Tropical Fish looks like a good match.

Hmmm how are we going to go about creating introduction threads. Would it make more sense to start a thread about each country and use this to discuss all the films shown from their, rather than each film with an individual thread. Any suggestions…… I don’t mind creating the thread pages with a brief historical / cinematic reference about each country and then each user can discuss their films following on from this…….

That’s an interesting idea about the threads Kuxa. It sounds great to me. I say go for it.

Brentos

I like the country based thread idea as well. That way those who find themselves liked films from specific countries can have a place to discuss some of that country’s cinema that didn’t make it into the Cup competition.

Nice, strangely though, those are two films that I’ve really been wanting to see and now there in a match together.

The way I see it, the World Cup format is just a mechanism to get as much diversity as possible. I don’t take the whole ‘national cinemas competing against each other’ aspect of it very seriously, as fun as it is. I’d still prefer if a film got its own introduction page — any historical context , regional, cultural or political information that helps in the appreciation of a film can (and should) definitely be mentioned in the intro, but discussing three films which might not really have anything in common except for the country in which they were produced together doesn’t sound particularly interesting to me.

Anyway, really glad to see Tareque Masud in the Cup, another director whose life was tragically cut short recently by a road accident. I’ve been meaning to watch Matir Moina for a long time.

I echo Beard’s attitude about the Cup and agree that each film should be introduced individially.

I’m starting to wonder (and some of my submissions are as guilty of this as anyone’s), is everyone pretty much going with relatively recent films? Are we going to see entries from the first half of cinema history as well?
