Are we going to see entries from the first half of cinema history as well?
While there will certainly be more films used from the last fifty years than from the fifty years before that, there certainly are several films from over fifty years ago that will be used.
@fake beard and Brad,
I see what you are saying. I think we should consider being open to both looking at the films indivdually to get more diversity of film, but I’m kind of interested in just expanding my understanding of different nations and cultures even beyond film, so that’s why I was interested in the pages about particular countries too. I think any user is open to post whatever kind of topics in whatever format they want. If you have a specific film you want to make an individual topic about please do so. If someone else makes a topic about that country and mentions the film as well, it’s no problem. The more places to discuss the better. :)
hey Riss, how do I access your blog again? I forgot to bookmark it.
Agreed Riss. I’d assume it would depend upon how those doing write ups want to contextualize their choices. For me, country of origin is just an excuse to present a great film. Others may feel there are interesting national patterns to discuss.
Glad we’ll be getting some oldies as well!
Three of my picks were silent. Hoping for some non-narrative (documentary, experimental, animated) films to pop up as well!
hmmm…..i’m going to take a psychic wild guess and predict that we’ll be seeing quite a few animated films before this cup is over….i just get this….feeling…
Are we going to see entries from the first half of cinema history as well?
So far, we have nothing from the first three-quarters of cinema history. I expect a lineup similar to Polaris’s voting list game.
^ though in this event that might be influenced by the availability (or lack) of (subtitled) earlyish films as well as submitter preference…
goddammit, where is that one bored slovenian with nothing better to do than a litte t&t (transcribe and translate) – work cut out…
History, smishtory—I just want to watch great movies. So far I’ve seen everything announced for which there are links, and there are some great movies here. I’ve rated two 4.5/5 and one a perfect 5/5. We’re off to a great start!

There will be some. Two people submitted lists entirely of animation.

eager to see, and non-narrative as well
Ok I will leave the threads…… but I will probably start ones up for the countries I selected. Hmmm I agree that some of the larger countries selctions may be totally disparate, but often small national cinemas have common cultural and aesthetic goals or traditions…. I am glad to see the love for Clay Birds so far…..
I’d love you to start threads for those countries you selected with the small national cinemas with “common cultural and aesthetic goals or traditions”

History, smishtory
If we’re going to disregard time as a function of political geography, I suggest we do the same with longitude. We can call it the Latitudinal Cup. Can I manage the Tropic of Cancer?
History, smishtory six times quickly…
that’s a worse tongue twister then red leather yellow leather
how are we going with tropical fish? it’s not on anywhere i can access it and i like the pic on mubi. (though i hope it’s not about children. i’ve exhausted my one-film tolerance level already)
Wait till you watch Forbidden Door. I’m sure you’ll really be over kids.
Meg’s working on getting Tropical Fish to YouTube. Might be up later today.
Nobody’s disregarding anything, Jerry—I’m just not going to be bitching about these things in the competition.
Can’t wait to see Tropical Fish.
I could potentially see my submission here irritating some people who might possibly see it as a tedious, elongated gimick. But I think it’s well worth submitting it for anyone who might see it for the first time and appreciate it as much as me. I’ll create a topic for the film with some more comments.

it’s a fix!
^ lol
It sounds like you are accusing the World Cup God of unethical behavior. I assure you if my film loses, it will lose fair and square!
Thank you Risselada, I’ve just looked up more about your choice and it sounds inspired. :D

you want to take that receipt you’ve got in your pocket back to the trophy engravers and tell them to replace ‘risselada – winner’ with ‘risselada – megalomaniac’ :)
but happy end is funny. i like funny. more funny, o divine one!
Yeah I had several funnies on my list. I’m glad to lighten the mood. Even if this one is a pretty weird and morbid funny if you think about it.
I’m just not going to be bitching about these things in the competition.
I’ll tell you the same thing I used to yell to the cheerleaders from the backfield trenches: shake that ass a little when you wave those pom-poms.
;)

YES! I am cheerleading (and you know you love to watch me shake it ;)
It’s not that I disagree with you, just that I’ve had enough of the negativity in previous competitions (as have we all, surely), and just want to enjoy this thing. Besides, it sounds like we’ll have a decent representation of silents.
Chewin tobacco,
Chewin tobacco,
Spit on the wall!
Come on Cup,
You’re the best of them all!

@Brad: I was worrying about that it might end up being a bit too contemporary as well. fwiw one of my three nominations is a silent film.
