Fred Wiseman distributes his own films and is a mean old sonofabitch. He’s going to ride in on a google alert anytime now and start kicking some ass.
it’s gorgeous soviet peasant shit, johnson, and you will watch it.
^ how to reel in Jerry
Yes ma’am. Off to watch it now.

It’s a coincidence to me that this match came up for me to announce today and just earlier some friends of mine announced they were moving to Bolivia.
yessss Pipilotti Rist! amazing choice Herbie!
Just read the last page of stuff and will comment.
First of all if you have a more clearly legal way to see these films that you know of, I fully endorse you using that method to see it. If I can pay to rent any of these films on a DVD available to me in my region I’ll do it. If anyone finds a site where the owner of the rights to distribute the film has legally provided a way for it to be streaming, free or to pay, I’ll put up the link for that. In most other cases I don’t feel too immoral about finding the film through other methods because it seems more of a case of it not being availble because the owner of the rights (if there is one) doesn’t care if it’s available rather than it not being available because the owner of the rights is purposly not making it available because they don’t want it to be. That’s my take on it. Use your own sense of morality and understanding of legalities in making your decision where you want to see the films.
Secondly, while I did say I have all of the films and matches lined up, I still have to do some work double checking to make sure I feel like all of the names and other data is correct for my records, and I have to post the match in several places, make it look pretty, send out emails to the people submitting for instructions, etc. So there is some work to do. I’ll admit there’s a combination of extra work to be done and my own (sick?) desire to keep you all wanting that keeps me from posting all of the matches quicker than I am. :)

Let’s be very clear here. There is no “more clearly legal way to see these films.” There is only one legal way to see them. The law here and in Europe and in Australia (I won’t pretend to know about laws in Latin America, Asia, or Africa- though I know piracy has run amok in Latin America and Asia) is very precise and straightforward.
“though I know piracy has run amok in Latin America and Asia”
A few years ago they closed down lots of sales stalls for pirated films at the largest avenida of Buenos Aires, so there’s at least some concern. They now only tend to sell some copies of recent releases at kiosks, but in other Latin American countries I’ve visited one can easily buy all kinds of pirated films anywhere on the streets, and many larger cities got depository warehouses with thousands of copied film to buy for around $2 (those near universities even specialize in art cinema).
And glad to see I’m sharing my choice of “La nación clandestina” with Javier (I got a feel the same could be the case with my pick for Colombia). I’ll have to check if it’s already on yt, there’s definitely a subtitled version available online, and I think that Sanjinés fits into the category of directors described by Risselada above.
EDIT: Those who speak Spanish can already find a complete version on yt if they type in the original title.
I know for a fact that some assholes at this site have made a huge issue out of the legality of it all, so please do keep whatever info you have to share in PMs.
Cultural exclusion, unfair distribution policies/practices and, like Risselada mentioned, copyrights disputes or negligences around the globe, justify the alternative methods of circulation for films. Probably and hopefully, some of them will have a world premiere in this event, and perhaps, their first judicious or rigorous comments and interesting criticisms in years as well. Of course I’m referring to the Third World cinematographies and the less represented countries in the hegemonic “history” and geography of filmmaking.
Marc, I’m so glad too :) “La nación clandestina” deserves world-wide attention, exposure and discussion. It’s great news to have it and Sanjinés finally in an event for film lovers such as this Cup. His films haven’t even barely had “pirated distribution”. I’m also looking for a version with English subs online.
Oh yes! probably we aimed at the same pick for Colombia.. and once again, it’d hopefully be its long-awaited premiere ;) actually, it’d be the case for many colombian films!
I hope another Sanjines would make it. :( This one is absolutely great. But Sanjines has other films worthy of everyone’s attention.

Just so you aren’t disappointed I will reveal now that I set it up so there wouldn’t be more than one film from any one director. The good news though is that Bolivia had enough other directors to compete!
You can buy the official dvd here:
Thank you.
I pretty much doubt that’s an official release, the price of 10 Bs. is just about US$1,50 which is exactly the price you pay for a copy. There are lots of these websites in Latin America, and in most cases they sell pirated DVDs. Sanjinés offered the actual DVD on his website for a very short while (for about US$35), but then it got taken down and became impossible to track down again. I will try if I can make a version with subs available on yt before the match starts.
@Javier: The Colombian film is one that I watched thanks to you some time ago (hint: Spanish director ;)).
You’re right Marc: the site provided by Jerry doesn’t refer exactly to an official release. Indeed, a bolivian friend once showed a pirated version to me in which we could find LNC and some other movies from different directors in just one disc. The quality was awful. There’s a famous case with a “Terra em transe” pirated vhs copy, that circulated massively around the world in internet catalogs some years before dvd’s popularity, and many people took for granted that it was an official release.
**Hoooray!!! That Colombian film deserves to be here as well!! but to tell you the truth, I proposed a less-known documentary from the early 70’s (Hint: female filmmaker, friend of Sanjinés) ;)
Well, not “massively”, “popularly” in some film cycles fits better :)
Very happy to have Pipilotti in the WC! I believe this is the first female director in the WC so far, as well as the first short and first avant garde work. I guess I refrain from using the word “film” there because it is very much a “video” in the physical and material sense. I think you’ll see what I mean if/when you watch it. When I first got interested in “film” I didn’t necessarily understand why some people choose to say “film and video” when they talk about different works, but now I think it’s really appropriate to use both terms in many situations.
Maybe I can save some of that tangential discussion for the intro thread, but I’m really glad to have one of my picks included and I can’t wait to tear through some of the already-announced films now that my hellish, busy last week has just ended.
And I guess it bears mentioning since it is a legal link, that Pipilotti’s Mistakes is available to watch (and with program notes) on UbuWeb, in case anyone is itching to get to that 11-minute short.
Well, I chose “Blood of the Condor”, which is my favorite by Jorge Sanjinés, but the available copy online is really poor, you can not say the film is in color or b/w. I submitted a second Bolivian film so I have a clue about the next contender…
Speaking of official releases, if anyone wants to get Semih Kaplanoğlu’s Egg (2007) you can get it in this box set in the UK or by itself – Yusuf Trilogy
Just finished Public Housing and wasn’t overly impressed, I’ve seen better work by Wiseman (but i’ve never been a huge fan of his anyways)
currently White Mountains and Egg are fighting for the “best movie i’ve seen so far” spot, both films are absolutely beautiful.
Can I get access to this blog site?
