It is difficult to watch Palms because it shows us the truth. It shows us real people. When films showing poverty start appearing superficially attractive, then it becomes “poverty porn” because of its falsehood. At the same time, I did not find the filming morbid which is on the other end of the spectrum.
A lot depends on the voice-over as well. For example, I did not entirely agree with the views of the commentator in this film but they were frenetically delivered(as if spoken by a madman) and hence were not didactic. The commentary was interesting throughout and it simply expressed a view point which might seem irrational but was not in bad taste. In hindsight, it almost seemed to make sense in a horrifying way.
