2012 MUBI World Cup Voting, Match #49: England (The Thief and the Cobbler: The Recobbled Cut) vs. Latvia (Restricted Area)
Ooooooh, I want to watch this one bad. But am busy the whole weekend!!

Neither entry was interesting enough for me to write about, being neither an animation buff, nor a documentary lover per se. It was close to a draw for me, or perhaps a punster might say “closed to a draw.”

the thief and the cobbler is some of the most amazing animation i have seen, if a bit weak in storyline and character development. restricted area is interesting but the moving subs bothered me a bit. i tried not to let it affect my opinion tho. i hope we’re getting more votes in this match?!

I loved the poetic effects of the polo match scene and other scenes involving the three balls, as well as the Goldberg-esque chain reaction causing the war machine to slowly but surely collapse. Juxtaposition of The Thief and the Cobbler with Restricted Area was very interesting given the stark contrast between the two films but also due to details such as the tattoo of the Kremlin(?) on one of the boy’s body that tied in with some of the exotic architecture in The Thief as well as the archetype of a thief (who is overcome by the cobbler’s persistent efforts to take back Yum-Yum’s shoe first and the three gold balls next) in the first being paralleled by the realistic portrayals of the delinquent boys in the second. I also liked the poetic touch of the butterfly in the beginning and the bird at the end of the case study/documentary.
