pretty sure i might be the only vote for the gypsies here so
brazil (men and women) 0 – moldova (gypsies are found near heaven) 1
this was something of a soviet blockbuster i think and it’s overly sentimental, melodramatic, romanticized, also bad dubbing on the songs but i still enjoyed the hell out of it. that’s probably just me tho. the brazilian film is no doubt the better made film, it just feels too much like antonioni to me. i still give it high marks. i don’t think even antonioni could’ve done it better, but for me the gypsies were just more fun
brazil (men and women) 1 – moldova (gypsies are found near heaven) 0
i agree with you Ruby, Gypsies was great fun, but i don;t think it even touched Men and Women
also, i’m just happy to be involved in the WC 2012 again! sorry about my extended break, i’ll be trying to catch ever match from here on out!
Wooohooooo! Good to see you here Brentos. You make me happy.
I really want to see Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven but I will have virtually no time at all to see either of these films. Life is hectic right now. Hoping for a short lul about a week from now.
yeah! good luck with the wedding and the honeymoon, let some of us other mubians take over the cup for a few weeks so you can take some time off and relax with your sweetheart!
Will do :)
the gypsies film is like a russian version of ‘hair’. it’s quite 70s. i was bored with the antonioni ennui and it was a refreshing change with the colorful costumes and dancing. i don’t pretend it’s even a good film really. as i said i’m sure it will lose but at least it got one vote :P here’s a number for riss since he wont’ get to watch it
sorry for not always taking things deadly seriously :P
Brazil (Men and Women) 1 – Moldova (Gypsies are Found Near Heaven) 0
A woman with a pipe. Nice.

As Ruby said the brazilian film is no doubt the better made film, it just feels too much like antonioni to me, and frankly, I’m not big fan of Antonioni post-L’avventura. Still a good movie, better than the model in many respects. So I vote for Loteanu’s elegy, even if I think his Lautarii is more evocative and heartbreaking.
brazil (men and women) 0 – moldova (gypsies are found near heaven) 1
Both great films but I am in love with gypsies!!
:0 gypsies take the lead!! go gypsies go!!
Although I liked the gypsies in Gypsies, especially the two main characters (who seemed bigger than life and at the height of their beauty,) and the message that freedom is more important than gold, I was disappointed by the dénouement precipitated by Rada underestimating her beau’s uncompromising need for freedom. I enjoyed the traditional songs of the gypsies and their dances but some of the musical scenes were too long, although not by much. As for the bourgeois decadence and ennui in Men and Women, it was surprisingly tolerable due to the aesthetic treatment of the film. The actresses playing the role of high-class call girls are beautiful and their characters seemed more developed than in most films depicting prostitution. Although the behavior of the men is morally reprehensible in that they seem to find nothing to be grateful for in their lives, the film allows the audience to see deeply into the souls of these characters who, on the surface, seem to have everything but hide their desperation beneath the sophisticated façade.

With guilt, and feeling like I’m betraying something, but…
Brazil (Men and Women) 0 – Moldova (Gypsies Are Found Near Heaven) 1
tie score people! 20 mins left to vote!
Looks like this one is finishing half an hour later? was it late starting…Meant to link Kai’s comments and thread discussion from the SW&A thread on Noite Vazia bit late now but there it is if anyone’s interested & hasn’t seen.
loved the gypsies too but couldn’t vote against the other
I can’t take the responsibility
oh i guess you’re right, it should be open for 40 more mins then. my bad
i’m a lil bit shocked by gypsies performance here, perennial underdogs that they are. like kuxa, i’m very fond of them but didn’t expect they’d garner more than a couple of votes against mubi fave noite vazia
that’s it, score is 4 all. congratulations everyone!!

Giant by thine own nature,
thou art beautiful, thou art strong, an intrepid colossus,
and thy future mirrors thy greatness.
Beloved Land
amongst a thousand others
art thou, Brazil,
O beloved homeland!
To the sons of this land
thou art a gentle mother,
beloved homeland,
Brazil!

Our language is the greenest leaf
Of the everlasting forests,
Gentle river Dniester’s ripples
Hiding starlight bright and shining.
Our language is more than holy,
Words of homilies of old
Wept and sung perpetually
In the homesteads of our folks.
A treasure will spring up swiftly
From deep shadows of the past,
Chain of precious stones that scattered
All over our ancient land.
In that case, since it’s a tie I’ll admit I thought Walter Hugo Khouri’s Men and Women an intrepid film which delighted me in spite of its troubled, existential ennui and I would certainly have voted for it, but how could I vote against gypsies and magic and Moldova, an area which has suffered so unfairly (as we were informed last round when Artour Aristakisian’s Palms devastated the Cup)? A tie seems in keeping with our addiction to eclectic films. Bravo Brazil & Moldova.
ah, missed this, my vote was for brazil.
Thanks for ending it. And sorry about the confusion with the ending time.
“ah, missed this, my vote was for brazil.” +1
It would be interesting if I could forget Gabriele Tinti’s eyes after Men and Women
