Canada (Les états nordiques) 1 – Jamaica (The Harder They Come) 0

I came to this match mind real open even though it was a personal favorite of mine and a submission against a movie I know nothing about except it implies Reggae, a type of music that, with all due respect, I don’t enjoy much. I overall find enjoyment in The Harder They Come and I must say the title song is really catchy. I thought although that the movie goes in a lot of directions and not always for the best. I though in the end it was a bit inequal and found some great scenes and other boring ones. As for Drifting States (Les États Nordiques) you can find my thoughts in the specific threads.

Drifting States and The Harder They Come are both fine films that address the same premise (how to thrive in a new environment) in stylistically opposite ways. Drifting States is very much a MUBI type film – understated, patient and ultimately dark. It flirts with the contemplative style, but also allowed the protagonist to express happiness when called for, as well as the beginnings of a sweet romance. The improvised performances are engaging, the shifting into interview mode for exposition was effective.

The Harder They Come is not a MUBI type film (although I’m sure some leftist message can be found for people into that kind of thing.) It felt like one of the better entries in the, then contemporary, Blaxploitation cycle, although the Jamaican setting provided both a fresh local and, of course, all the great reggae music throughout. The plot is pure genre, following the anti-hero story as has been told many times, but the unique spices on the familiar dish make this one a winner.

The Canadian film had a serious purpose and could not be accused of excess but i’m not keen on the muted emotions, colours, music, most of the close-ups or the camerawork and it left me quite cold. I’ve not seen The Harder they Come for some time but it was more fun.
