This topic is part of the 2012 MUBI World Cup. If you have not already done so, please read the first post at the topic for an introduction to and rules about this year’s World Cup:
The purpose of this topic is to cast votes in the matchup listed above and also to be a forum for discussing the films in the match.
Anyone who has seen both of the films listed above may vote in this match. You must vote for whichever of the two films you personally like better. In order to vote you must post a reply to this topic containing one of the following sequences:
If you are voting for Les états nordiques: “Canada (Les états nordiques) 1 – Jamaica (The Harder They Come) 0”
If you are voting for The Harder They Come: “Canada (Les états nordiques) 0 – Jamaica (The Harder They Come) 1”
Your vote must contain the names of both films with a “one” after the film you are voting for and a “zero” after the other film. If your vote is not formatted in this way it will not be counted.
Along with your vote you are strongly encouraged to leave additional comments regarding your reactions to the films, your reasons for why you voted the way you did, and responses to other participants’ comments. Being able to have deep discussion about the films and different aspects of them is an important part of finding enjoyment in participating in the World Cup.
This match will end on Friday, August 10 at 10:00 PM GMT. No votes attempted to be cast after that time will be counted. Shortly after the match ends the votes will be tallied and a winner of the match will be declared. If the films both receive the same number of votes, the match will be considered a tie.
The percentage of votes each film receives in a match will have an effect on whether or not the corresponding country will participate in the final round of the World Cup. Thus even if the film you vote for loses in this match, your vote will still be important.
The results of the matches as well as the schedule for future matches can be found here:
If you would like to participate but are unable to find sources to watch these films, please send me a personal message so that I can invite you to the private website featuring internet links to view the films.
Canada (Les états nordiques) 1 – Jamaica (The Harder They Come) 0
I came to this match mind real open even though it was a personal favorite of mine and a submission against a movie I know nothing about except it implies Reggae, a type of music that, with all due respect, I don’t enjoy much. I overall find enjoyment in The Harder They Come and I must say the title song is really catchy. I thought although that the movie goes in a lot of directions and not always for the best. I though in the end it was a bit inequal and found some great scenes and other boring ones. As for Drifting States (Les États Nordiques) you can find my thoughts in the specific threads.
Canada (Les états nordiques) 0 – Jamaica (The Harder They Come) 1
Drifting States and The Harder They Come are both fine films that address the same premise (how to thrive in a new environment) in stylistically opposite ways. Drifting States is very much a MUBI type film – understated, patient and ultimately dark. It flirts with the contemplative style, but also allowed the protagonist to express happiness when called for, as well as the beginnings of a sweet romance. The improvised performances are engaging, the shifting into interview mode for exposition was effective.
The Harder They Come is not a MUBI type film (although I’m sure some leftist message can be found for people into that kind of thing.) It felt like one of the better entries in the, then contemporary, Blaxploitation cycle, although the Jamaican setting provided both a fresh local and, of course, all the great reggae music throughout. The plot is pure genre, following the anti-hero story as has been told many times, but the unique spices on the familiar dish make this one a winner.
i’ll be back mon
If it were music, wouldn’t be close.
^ I was just thinking the same thing.
Was going to watch Côté film this morning, but seems my interwebz is acting up. Sucks because I really want to watch it.
The Canadian film had a serious purpose and could not be accused of excess but i’m not keen on the muted emotions, colours, music, most of the close-ups or the camerawork and it left me quite cold. I’ve not seen The Harder they Come for some time but it was more fun.
canada (les états nordiques) 0 – jamaica (the harder they come) 1
way more fun. it’s not the greatest film ever made but it’s in the running for greatest soundtrack
