250/50: The MUBI Forum Users' Top 20 List Finals

I think there’s an important lesson to be learned from this game: The movies we like are frail sand castles on a big beach. People come running along and knock them down with no concern whatsoever. So we need to build a lot more castles in more than just one spot.

Seven Up is fine, but it’s really not a big deal without the films that follow it.

“Thanks for the clarification of the rules but I cant quite grasp the victimization that exists here. Its bizarre to me that someone would vote down a film because they don’t like the person who likes that film. Most likely more than one person is going to like that film so you’re really not doing anything productive.”

I expected it, though yeah, it gets a little frustrating sometimes. I have run this game three times before; on one forum where I ran it twice it was nonexistent, and in another forum where I ran it once it happened but quickly turned this one guy away and it stopped. Both were much smaller forums with much less interest re: canon/non-canon, general interest in foreign, marginalized, obscure flicks, etc. As I keep saying, Blade Runner one best movie of all time on all three lists (this one it dropped ages ago). Passions here run quite high.

I do not really like it but there is a reason I am not a moderator on any forums anymore. I do not care to make those decisions. Knowing that going into this game, people would refer to me towards these issues, I’ve been trying to mostly just let people be and only bring up issues if they’ve gotten a lot of vocal attention (stuff like the Filipino contingent). If it’s just people tussling each other, I couldn’t be fuckered to care.

Though I do like the despair! The despair is funny! Everytime a user makes a comment like mine about Videodrome, an angel gets its wings!

+2 News From Home

-1 The Act of Seeing with One’s Own Eyes
-1 Playtime

I’m pretty sad about Videodrome, too, and Koyaanisqatsi is about to die, and L’eclisse is pretty low, too. This game is demoralizing.

Nevertheless, I’ll keep pushing on:

Hiroshima Mon Amour +2
Ikiru -1
Possession -1

Keep in mind, I liked Possession, but I don’t think it belongs in the top 20. Also, Ikiru is, I think, the last movie on the list that I actually disliked. Pretty soon I think I’ll stop doing negative votes… especially since that rule is a lot less harsh now!

James, is 3 Women your pick? I don’t want you to think I have a personal thing against it, though I’ve voted it down twice. It’s just the highest rated of the films on the list I’ve seen and I wouldn’t put it at the top of my own list, so I vote it down. Looks like it’s going to stay in the top 20 anyway. ;-)

@Drunken Father Figure of Old Pretty soon I think I’ll stop doing negative votes… especially since that rule is a lot less harsh now!

No, it’s harsher than ever: «Voters must vote down a certain amount of movies per round. Currently the minimum is two. If we only vote down one movie, or none, the every movie on the list gets dropped -1 and the required minimum rises to three. THEN, if we only vote off two movies or less, every movie on the list gets -1 and the required minimum rises to four. And so on.»

@Black Irish - thanks for M!

The Wind (Sjostrom) +2

Street of Crocodiles -1
Seven Up! -1

+2 Out of the Past

-1 Stranger Than Paradise
-1 His Girl Friday

So there are only 32 films left on the list that I have actually seen, and I don’t really want to vote down any of them. So since I am not personally crazy about the partial votes rule (though I understand its necessity), I am left with the decision to vote against perfectly decent films I have seen instead of a whole slew of films I have not seen. Plus Monty Python is out, so I am pretty convinced that the top 20 will be a super-serious, no-fun-allowed obscurorama.
