With all the talk about Mubi resolutions, I think mine will be to slow down on the endlessly searching for hundreds of new discoveries, and rewatch some of my new favorites from 2011.

I just wanted to add that one of the great things about this game is that it has brought out users who otherwise don’t contribute much and are becoming part of the forum. It’s a nice, fun thing, where you can still remain as anonymous as you want (or not) but contribute in a meaningful way.
They say that on sites like these, that only a tiny minority actually post, and here’s hoping that this game is enough of an ice-breaker to get more people more involved in the forum.
Cheers.
Documentary list would be perfect!

Documentaries would be great, and that’s a category I have a solid list for, but Shorts and Animation would be ones I know less of and so more looking forward to discoveries.
Either way—win win. We should do them all.
Like I said earlier, we’re going to need volunteers to run them, though, as it’s not fair or practical to ask DiB to continue his outstanding work to keep these going.

Need help in saving the Hou Hsiao-Hsien which needs two more +2s to survive this round.
Andrei Rublev and Sansho the Bailiff have just been blasted this round and are on the brink. 3 Women is now in the lead by a good margin over every film except Harakiri and Shadows of Forgotten Ancestors.
I agree with the ideas of running this kind of Top 20 around subjects like Animation, Experimental/Avant Garde cinema, documentary films, etc.
I also think it might be interesting to look at earlier centuries of cinema- let’s say 1895-1949. While we are creating a “counter-canon” here we have tended to favor post WW2 cinema over earlier cinema.
Maybe the top contest could come back in 2014 but as a Top 50 or even dare i say it a Top 100. This might give us enough room to mix it up a bit between inclusion of some more canonical choices from G8 nations along with less familiar choices from the 2/3’s world and/or marginalized filmmakers with the Global North. I also am very interested how film may change as global political power shifts? Will we have more Chinese films represented in a 2014 list? More Latin American? Will there be an explosion of filmmaking and film preservation projects within Arab nations that coincide with democratic social movements victories (and defeats) in this region? It will be interesting to see how world developments alter our choices of what we think is “the best”.

“Kill the canon! Kill the canon!”
There’s me promoting Sansho all these years and now it’s too well known?? If only. Noone at the film societies i’ve been in had even heard of Mizoguchi, nor the programmers at local cinemas that screen some “arthouse” films.
